Open Women Experience Senior Day Success, Top Trio In Lake Carnegie Finale
April 29, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Open
For Kanoe Shizuru and her senior classmates, there have been countless happy memories from Lake Carnegie over the last four years, but they still wanted to make one more Saturday morning.
Mission accomplished.
The seventh-ranked Tigers won four races on the morning, including each of the three NCAA boats, to close out their 2017 season on a positive note. The first varsity capped an undefeated regular season with a tight win over 15th-ranked Syracuse, while the 2V and V4A both had tight wins over 11th-ranked Iowa.
"I was overjoyed to have my last race on Carnegie be such a tough one that ended in a win," Shizuru said. "This team has given me so much in the past four years, and I will miss it dearly. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to represent Princeton on a team that inspires me every day.
"Penn, Iowa, and Syracuse were all fierce competition today," she added. "It was great for our team to be able to go up against some tough cross-conference competition and showcase the strength of the Ivy League. We were really lucky to be able to test our speed against teams from two of rowing's toughest conferences, and I'm proud of the way the team showed up today."
Princeton will now turn its attention to the 2017 Ivy League Championships, which will be held Sunday, May 14, on Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The full regatta will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
The Tigers received a good test in their final races before Ivies. Each of the NCAA-format races were decided by fewer than four seconds, including a V4A race that was decided by less than two seconds.
"I was very pleased with the way the varsity four raced this morning," Shizuru said. "Particularly, we brought the traction, and I thought that we responded well to pressure from other crews and answered with aggressive presses. Having that skill in our back pocket will be crucial going into the tough racing we are certain to face at the Ivy League Championship."
Head coach Lori Dauphiny was glad to see her Class of 2017 experience a strong final day on Lake Carnegie.
"I would like to recognize the seniors and thank them for their dedication to this team," she said. "They will always be a part of our boathouse and program!"
