Women's Lights Bring 'Completely Different Feel' vs. Loaded Knecht Cup Field In 2017 Opener
April 06, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
KNECHT CUP LINKS: Schedule l Results
One year ago, head coach Paul Rassam entered smaller boats into the Knecht Cup field, hoping to continue a developmental year for his women's lightweight squad.
This year, he has far different plans.
"What a difference a year makes," Rassam said a few days before Princeton opens its 2017 season at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake. "This year has a completely different feel. We are just on a totally different level than the last time we came here. We feel ready."
The developments that Princeton made last season, which ended with trips to the grand finals at both Eastern Sprints and the IRA Championships, certainly played a role in the growth. There is plenty of veteran leadership in the boat, including senior co-captains Juliette Hackett and Christina Warren, as well as three-year 1V coxswain Megan Mirabella.
But an influx of talent in the Class of 2020 has certainly bolstered the boat as well. The freshman trio of Georgia Hellard Timm, Emma Hopkins, and Laura Zecca are all expected to make their collegiate debuts in the 1V this weekend. And they'll get thrown right into the fire, as all of the major collegiate powers — including reigning IRA champion Stanford and Eastern powers Boston University, Radcliffe, and Georgetown — will be in the competition.
The 1V will race in a 6:21 pm semifinal against the likes of Radcliffe, Georgetown and Boston University; a top-three finish would give the Tigers a chance to make a major early-season statement in the 10:40 am Sunday final.
Rassam will also have an opportunity to see three other boats in action over the weekend. He has broken his 2V8 into a pair of fours, which will race in Saturday's 10:11 and 10:18 semifinals. His novice eight will make its Princeton debut in the open novice field at 12:10 Saturday.
