EUGENE, Ore. (6/7/17) - Junior William Paulson lined up for the second event on the track on Day 1 of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In semifinal 2, Paulson lined up in line 1 and was in the top pack from the start. He was sitting in sixth on the inside rail through the first 300 with a  split of 44.52, then had a 1:03.81 through 700 meters. Paulson was still in good position, though still on the inside rail at the bell at 1:01.37. Before he had a chance to make his move, a tight muscle caused him to pull up on the third curve and he exited the track.
Â
Paulson reached the NCAA Championships, his first, after taking seventh at the NCAA East Regional two weeks ago. The Ivy League Heptagonal runner-up in the event, Paulson posted a personal best of 3:42.23 this season.
Â
Senior August Kiles bowed out of the pole vault as he could not reach the opening height of 5.15 (16-10.75). He wasn't feeling his first run and he didn't start his swing up. His second attempt looked strong but he hit the bar with his toe on his swing up to the bar. Kiles third attempt was his best but again he clipped the bar with his foot.
Â
Kiles completes his Princeton career as a three-time Ivy League Heptagonal Champion and three-time runner-up in the pole vault both indoors and outdoors. A two-time NCAA Regional qualifier, Kiles holds the indoor Heptagonal record at 5.40 (17-8.5) and the third best outdoor record in the league at 5.31 (17-5).
Â
The pair were both instrumental in Princeton winning both the indoor and outdoor Ivy League titles during the 2016-17 academic year.
