Weekend Debuts: Lussi '17 in Portland, Sheppard with Canadian U-20s
July 09, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Saturday saw Princeton women's soccer players current and former make debuts with professional or national teams on either side of the Pacific, with Tyler Lussi '17 seeing her first action with the Portland Thorns and rising sophomore Olivia Sheppard starting for Canada's U-20 team against host Australia.
Sheppard's trip to Australia was a part of a two-match series for the Canadians against the U.S. and Australia, with Canada taking Thursday's game against the American U-18 team 4-1 before a 1-0 loss to Australia Saturday. The start was Sheppard's first with Team Canada.
Lussi played the second half for Portland in a 1-1 draw against Houston, with the Dash getting a Janine Beckie goal in the eighth minute and Lindsey Horan scoring for Portland in added time to save the tie. Portland, with 19 points, remains in fifth in the National Women's Soccer League, just one point behind Seattle for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Thorns have 11 more opportunities to pick up points before the end of the regular season on Sept. 30.
As for Sheppard and the rest of the returning Tigers as well as the rookies, Princeton's preseason will begin in mid-August ahead of the August 25 opener against Monmouth at Roberts Stadium.
