No. 4 Duke Holds Off No. 15 Princeton, 2-1

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 4 Duke Blue Devils held off the No. 15 Princeton Tigers, 2-1, at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Duke had the first scoring threat in the fourth minute on a corner opportunity, but the shot attempt was blocked.
In the 14th minute, the Blue Devils' Rose Tynan tried to sneak a baseline entry by Grace Baylis, but the Princeton goalie denied it.
The Tigers' best scoring chance in the first half came with 15 minutes to go. Ryan McCarthy slid in the circle and sent an attempt towards the goalie, but Duke's Sammi Steele made the stop.
The home team got on the board as time expired as Margaux Paoloino deposited a rebound attempt off a corner into the back of the cage.
Princeton's first opportunity of the second half was in the 50th minute on a corner. On an insert from Clara Roth, Sophia Tornetta bashed one on goal, but Steele saved it. Steele made another save on a corner a minute later.
The No. 4 nationally ranked squad went in front, 2-0, as Tynan posted a backhand shot into the cage with 18 minutes remaining.
A few minutes later, Princeton connected on a corner. McCarthy lined a shot towards the cage that Elise Wong deflected into the cage.
Princeton thought to have tied the game, but had the shot was deemed dangerous following a video review.
After being turned away on two corners, the Tigers put together one more offensive push in the final two minutes. With 1:44 remaining, Roth inserted a corner, but Tornetta had her shot blocked. With under a minute left, the Tigers had one more corner, but Steele knocked away the shot.
Tornetta led the Tigers with four shots while Maddie Bacskai and McCarthy added two shots. Baylis had four saves in the game.
Princeton falls to 1-4 on the season while Duke improves to 6-1. The Tigers will continue on the road vs. No. 9 Maryland on Tuesday. The matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m.
