Packed Dillon Crowd Watches Tigers Open Ivy Season With Sweep Of Penn
September 22, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Natasha Skov led a balanced offensive attack, while senior co-captain Maddie Huber paced a swarming defense, to lead the two-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Penn in the 2017 Ivy League opener Friday night. The win thrilled a packed Dillon Gym, which was filled with student-athletes from a variety of teams on campus who energized the reigning league champion throughout the night.
Skov, the Ivy League kills leader, led all players with 13 kills, while classmates Maggie O'Connell and Devon Peterkin both added nine kills in the win. Junior middle Nnenna Ibe had six kills and no errors, and she combined with fellow middle Caroline Sklaver for 10 blocks in the match. Huber led all players with 12 digs, while sophomore setter Jessie Harris had seven digs to go along with her 36 assists.
Princeton (8-3, 1-0 Ivy) saw the majority of the drama in the opening set, which was close throughout and saw Penn fight off three set balls before an O'Connell kill gave Princeton a 26-25 lead. Freshman Lauren Flaming, who had six digs in her Ivy League debut, recorded an ace to clinch the opening set, and Princeton rolled with the momentum from there.
Princeton returns to the court with a crucial road trip next weekend, which opens with a 7 pm match at Brown Friday night. Princeton will travel to Yale, the site of its lone Ivy loss last season, for a Saturday matchup at 5 pm. Both matches are scheduled to be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
Princeton has now 21 of its last 22 Ivy League regular season matches.
