Outsides Power Princeton Past Brown; Tigers Look For First Win At Yale Since 2007 Saturday
September 29, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team has prided itself on balance this season, but for one night in Providence, the Tigers relied on their two outside hitters to lead the way to a second straight Ivy League win.
Sophomore Devon Peterkin led the Tigers with 14 kills, while Ivy League kills leader Natasha Skov added 12 more, to lead the Tigers to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Brown to open their first weekend of road Ivy League action.
Peterkin, who missed the first two weekends of the season due to a preseason injury, had her best performance of 2017; she had 14 kills with only one error (.448), and she added six digs, two blocks and an assist. The entire offense was extremely efficient; four starters hit at least .375, including an .833 effort for Caroline Sklaver (5-0-6). Sophomore setter Jessie Harris paced the offense with 33 assists, and she added 13 digs in the win.
Senior co-captain Maddie Huber led the defense with 14 digs, while Maggie O'Connell and Nnenna Ibe combined for nine blocks.
After a convincing effort in the first two sets, the Tigers found themselves trailing 22-19 in the third set; a kill from O'Connell set up Harris with the serve, and she led the Tigers to a 5-0 run that set up match ball. Peterkin finished it off with her 14th kill, which ended Princeton's 22nd victory in its last 23 regular-season league matches.
A 23rd win Saturday would be the sweetest of the season, as the Tigers head to New Haven Saturday at 5 pm (Ivy League Network) for a first-place showdown with Yale. The Bulldogs have won 18 straight and 55 of their last 56 Ivy home matches, including a 3-2 victory over Princeton last season. That was the lone Ivy loss of the season for the Tigers, who went on to win the outright title and return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007. That was also the last year that the Tigers left New Haven with a victory.
That's a streak they'd love to see finish this weekend.
