Tigers Score 28 Unanswered Points, Move Into Ivy Play With 38-17 Win At Lafayette

Volker would have no such sadness Saturday night, and neither did any of his teammates.
The junior tailback rushed 20 times for 111 yards and a touchdown, while classmate Jesper Horsted caught six passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns, to lead Princeton to a 38-17 victory over Lafayette in front of 7,239 fans at Fisher Stadium.
It was Princeton's 10th straight win over Lafayette in the 50th overall meeting between the two historic programs, and it was the Tigers' ninth win in the last 10 games, dating back to the memorable 2016 Ivy championship season.
Head coach Bob Surace credited his team's professionalism in the win, where the Tigers overcame an energetic start by a Lafayette team looking for its first win under new head coach John Garrett '88. Surace, who shared a postgame hug with his former teammate afterwards, also reiterated how much Garrett and his family meant to both his coaching career and personal life to the Easton media afterwards.
But during the game, his attention was on a Princeton team that continues to evolve as it heads to next weekend's Ivy League opener against Columbia, a 12:30 Saturday start on Powers Field. The games will be shown live on Eleven Sports, and streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
One week after senior quarterback Chad Kanoff completed 32 of 43 passes against San Diego, Kanoff hit 31 of 42 passes for 256 yards and three more touchdowns, including the first career score for Alex Parkinson. Sophomore Ryan Quigley also scored on a one-yard carry that came during a 28-0 run midway through the game.
Senior linebacker Mark Fossati led Princeton in tackles (11) for a second straight game, while Ben Ellis added 10. Freshman cornerback CJ Wall, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, added eight tackles and recorded another game-ending interception.
Mike Wagner had two of Princeton's three sacks — Kurt Holuba had the other — while the Tigers had five pass breakups.
Lafayette gained 47% of its total yards after Princeton had secured a 38-10 lead in the fourth quarter, including a 70-yard bomb on a fourth down play.
For the second straight game, a Tiger receiver had a multiple-touchdown game. One week after Stephen Carlson caught three touchdowns in a 28-17 win over San Diego, Horsted added his first two scores of the season at Lafayette. The first (see below) came on a perfectly executed play by Kanoff, who faked a handoff, then a quarterback draw, before hitting Horsted on a slant for the score. Those two connected for Princeton's final score, a fade into the front left corner of the end zone that gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the game.
