September 24, 2017 | Field Hockey
BOSTON –  Maddie Bacskai's goal in the 49th minute gave the No. 17 Princeton Tigers a 1-0 victory over the No. 24 Boston University Terriers at New Balance Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After the Tigers were turned away on the first corner of the game in the fifth minute, Grace Baylis made an impressive save to keep the score tied at zero a few moments later.
Â
Right before the half, Carlotta von Gierke found Julianna Tornetta in the circle, but Tornetta's backhanded shot was sent away from Boston's Millie Baker. Princeton's best scoring chance in the first stanza came with five minutes to go. Ryan McCarthy blasted a shot that hit the crossbar while Clara Roth's attempt was sent away.
Â
Baylis made another strong stop with 36 seconds to go in the half, keeping the score at 0-0.
Â
Two minutes into the second half, Julianna Tornetta slammed a shot towards the cage that BU's goalie Kathleen Keegan came up with. Princeton keep sending shots, but couldn't get one through.
Â
In the 49th minute, the No. 17 nationally ranked Tigers executed penalty corner to get on the scoreboard. On the corner, Roth inserted to Bacskai, who sent an attempt that deflected off a defender and trickled into the cage.
Â
McCarthy was looking for an equalizer, but Keegan denied her shot in the 56th minute. Roth had back-to-back attempts with under 10 minutes to go, but they were wide.
Â
Princeton held the home squad without a shot for the final 21 minutes. The Tigers outshot the Terriers, 13-4, and did not give up a penalty corner.
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's team is now 4-4 on the season and currently on a three-game winning streak. It's the seventh victory over a ranked opponent for the Tigers in Tagliente's tenure. Princeton takes on Yale on Friday at Bedford Field. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
