PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 16 Princeton Tigers have a busy weekend on tap as they take on the Yale Bulldogs (Friday, 6 p.m.) before traveling to the No. 7 Syracuse Orange (Sunday, 2 p.m.).
What's Going On?
- Behind an impressive five-point outing from senior captain Ryan McCarthy, Princeton ran by Dartmouth, 5-0, at Chase AstroTurf Field on Saturday afternoon.
- It's McCarthy's fifth multi-goal game in the last two seasons.
- The Tornetta sisters combined for 11 shots in the game and three assists. Julianna Tornetta was second on the squad with seven shots, adding two helpers. Four different players scored for Princeton.
- Maddie Bacskai's goal in the 49th minute gave Princeton a 1-0 victory over No. 24 Boston University at New Balance Field on Sunday afternoon.
- Princeton is 41-2-3 all time vs. the Yale Bulldogs. The last time the Tigers lost to Yale, Jimmy Carter was the President of the United States (1977).
- Princeton is currently on a 39-game unbeaten streak and 32-game winning streak against Yale.
- The Tigers are 20-2-1 at Princeton against Yale.
- Three different Tigers scored as No. 11 Princeton bested Yale, 3-0, at Johnson Field.
- Hailey Reeves '17 registered her seventh career goal while Maddie Bacskai and Carlotta von Gierke secured their first collegiate tallies. Grace Baylis made four saves in the win.
- Yale is 4-3 on the season with victories over Sacred Heart, Hofstra, Central Michigan and Liberty. The Bulldogs are 0-1 in the Ivy League, having lost to Harvard.
- Carol Middough leads the Bulldogs with six goals and 13 points.
- Sydney Terroso was named last week's Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
- Princeton is 11-9 all-time vs. Syracuse.
- The two teams have split their four postseason meetings.
- The Orange have won the last six meetings vs. the Tigers.
- Princeton last won against Syracuse in 2010.
- The Tigers are 5-5 in New York all-time.
- Princeton gave No. 1 Syracuse all it could handle before ultimately falling at J.S. Coyne Stadium, 4-2.
- Down 1-0 at the intermission, Syracuse netted four second half goals.
- Jane Donio-Enscoe and Ryan McCarthy scored for the Tigers.
- The Orange are 8-2 on the season with three wins over ranked opponents.
- Elaine Carey leads the team with six goals and 17 points on the season.
- Syracuse has five players with at least 10 points.
- The Orange have won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament in seven of the past eight seasons.
- The Tigers battle nine 2016 NCAA Tournament teams along with the other three squads from the Final Four on its 2017 schedule.
- The Tigers have 10 nationally ranked teams on their schedule.
- Seven of the team's first eight games come against ranked opponents. The first weekend for Princeton without a top-25 opponent comes Oct. 14-15 when it travels to Brown and Northeastern.
- No. 1 UConn (Oct. 8) is the last ranked squad to appear at Bedford Field.
- The Tigers went 12-8 in 2016 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season, receiving the program's first at-large bid to the tournament.
- One of the greatest moments in program history, Sophia Tornetta laced a laced a shot into the back of the cage as time expired to send the Tigers to the Final Four for the first time since 2012 with a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Virginia.
- No. 8 Delaware ended Princeton's season in the national semifinals as Esmee Peet scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining, giving the Blue Hens a 3-2 decision. Delaware would go on to win the national championship.
- The Tigers had five players selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams. Caro and Ryan McCarthy were picked for the all-region first team while Maddie Bacskai, Tornetta and Elise Wong were honored with second team accolades.
- Caro topped off her fabulous senior season with a Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I All-America First Team accolade. She had a personal-high 18 goals and 47 points. She registered a point in 15 of the team's 19 games and finished the season eighth in the country in goals (.95) and 13th in points per game (2.26).
- In January, Katie '13 and Julia '14 Reinprecht retired from the United States National Field Hockey team.
- The two sisters retire as two-time Olympians, helping the U.S. to fifth place in the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since the 1996 summer games in Atlanta. They also won two gold medals at the Pan American Games (2011, 2015). Wrapping up their careers, Katie finished with 166 caps while Julia had 154 caps.
- Kathleen Sharkey '13 helped the national squad to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup in mid-August. She scored five times, leading the tournament in scoring.
- Princeton continues to be well-represented with USA Field Hockey as four Tigers were named to the U.S. U-21 National Team and two more to the National Development Squad.
- Maddie Bacskai, Julianna Tornetta, Sophia Tornetta and Elise Wong were picked to the U-21 squad while Cat Caro '17 and Ryan McCarthy were selected to the development team. Princeton's four representatives on the U-21 team are the most in the country.
