PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers overwhelmed the No. 22 Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 4-1, at Bedford Field on Friday afternoon.
After an 0-2 stretch against two NCAA Final Four squads from last season, the Tigers used a four-point outing from a familiar source to wrap up its first win of the season.
Ryan McCarthy.
The All-Region player from a year ago broke through with her first two tallies of the season while freshman MaryKate Neff recorded a goal and added an assist. The Tigers peppered the Scarlet Knights with 15 shots in the victory.
Krista Hoffman got Princeton on the board in the 16th minute as she swatted a rebound attempt in mid-air off a corner shot into the back of the cage.
In the 31st minute, Neff handled a pass over to McCarthy as she was sliding through the circle which the senior captain riffled into the cage, putting Princeton in front, 2-0.
This time it was Neff's turn to get into the action in the second half. During the 43rd minute, after a shot attempt off corner, the freshman dove for the loose ball and touched it behind the line for her first collegiate tally.
The senior captain's penalty stroke in 49th minute sealed Princeton's victory. Rutgers scored in the 50th minute, but couldn't convert on its last two shots of the game to get any closer.
After scoring 12 goals in her first 37 games, McCarthy has ripped off 16 in the 23 games since. Princeton has five victories over nationally ranked teams over the past two seasons. Head coach Carla Tagliente's unit faces three more top-25 teams in the next four games including two in the top three.
Rutgers fell to 4-1 on the season. Princeton has won 10 straight meetings vs. the Scarlet Knights. The Tigers get back in action on Sunday (12 p.m.) at Bedford Field against No. 3 Penn State. The game can be seen on the Ivy League Network or the Princeton Athletics Facebook page.
