No. 3 Penn State Gets By No. 12 Princeton, 2-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite taking 12 shots in the second half, the No. 12 Princeton Tigers fell to the No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions, 2-0, at Bedford Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions put the offensive pressure on early as they received four straight penalty corners over a four-minute span. The Tigers' defense stood stall as Grace Baylis made a stop while two other attempts were blocked.
Penn State broke through in the 13th minute as Moira Putsch deflected a shot attempt from Katie Dembrowski into the cage.
A few minutes later, the Nittany Lions looked to add on, but Baylis stood her ground with another save. In the 18th minute, the visitors had a shot hit the post off a corner.
In the 25th minute, Ryan McCarthy found some clear space after a defender slipped and sent a long pass just out of the reach of streaking Sophia Tornetta in the circle. Right before the half, Elise Wong deflected a shot on the cage, but Penn State's goalie Jenny Rizzo denied it.
After the intermission, Princeton's first corner of the second half produced a scoring chance, but McCarthy's attempt was wide.
In the 52nd minute, Penn State converted directly off a corner as Aurelia Meijer deposited one in the back of the cage to make the contest, 2-0.
Trailing by two, the Tigers' offense went into high gear with four consecutive shots, but couldn't get one through. Baylis kept Princeton within two, coming up with two more saves after a corner with 11 minutes to go in the game.
As the clock ticked under three minutes, the home team desperately tried to get on the scoreboard as they ripped off four shots, but Rizzo made three saves while another shot was blocked to seal the win for Penn State.
After being outshot, 9-3, in the first half, Princeton held 12-3 advantage in the second stanza. McCarthy led the team with five shots while MaryKate Neff and Clara Roth each took three. Baylis finished with four saves in the loss.
Princeton fell to 1-3 on the season while Penn State improved to 5-0. The Tigers will travel down to No. 1 Duke next Sunday. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
