PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 15 Princeton Tigers take on another top-five squad in the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium on Sunday afternoon (12 p.m.).
What's Going On?
- Ryan McCarthy provide two tallies while MaryKate Neff added a goal and assist as the Tigers dropped then-No. 22 Rutgers, 4-1, at Bedford Field on Friday. It was the team's fifth win over a nationally ranked team in the last two years.
- Despite taking 12 shots in the second half, Princeton fell to No. 3 Penn State, 2-0, at Bedford Field on Sunday afternoon.
- After being outshot, 9-3, in the first half, Princeton held 12-3 advantage in the second stanza. McCarthy led the team with five shots while Neff and Clara Roth each took three. Grace Baylis finished with four saves in the loss.
- The Tigers battle nine 2016 NCAA Tournament teams along with the other three squads from the Final Four on its 2017 schedule.
- The Tigers have 10 nationally ranked teams on their schedule.
- Seven of the team's first eight games come against ranked opponents. The first weekend for Princeton without a top-25 opponent comes Oct. 14-15 when it travels to Brown and Northeastern.
- No. 1 UConn (Oct. 8) is the last ranked squad to appear at Bedford Field.
- Princeton leads the all-time series, 5-4. The Tigers are 2-2 on the road against Duke.
- The Tigers earned three victories in the first four meetings between 1997-2000.
- Following the meeting in 2000, the two teams did not see each other until the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, a game Duke won at Princeton, 2-1.
- Princeton took two of three from Duke between 2012-14.
- Alyssa Chillano scored on a penalty stroke nine minutes into overtime to give No. 2 Duke a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Princeton at Bedford Field.
- It was a defensive battle in the first half of the contest as the two teams combined for just five shots and three penalty corners.
- In her first appearance after missing time with an injury, Sophia Tornetta scored with 10:47 to go to tie the game at 1-all.
- The Blue Devils are 4-1 on the season with three victories over ranked opponents.
- Duke began the season at No. 2, jumped to No. 1, but lost to then-No. 10 Virginia to fall to No. 3.
- Rose Tynan leads the team with four goals and nine points this season. Six different Blue Devils have scored this year.
- Sammi Steele has three shutouts and 21 saves in the team's five games.
- The Tigers went 12-8 in 2016 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season, receiving the program's first at-large bid to the tournament.
- One of the greatest moments in program history, Sophia Tornetta laced a laced a shot into the back of the cage as time expired to send the Tigers to the Final Four for the first time since 2012 with a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Virginia.
- No. 8 Delaware ended Princeton's season in the national semifinals as Esmee Peet scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining, giving the Blue Hens a 3-2 decision. Delaware would go on to win the national championship.
- The Tigers had five players selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams. Caro and Ryan McCarthy were picked for the all-region first team while Maddie Bacskai, Tornetta and Elise Wong were honored with second team accolades.
- Caro topped off her fabulous senior season with a Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I All-America First Team accolade. She had a personal-high 18 goals and 47 points. She registered a point in 15 of the team's 19 games and finished the season eighth in the country in goals (.95) and 13th in points per game (2.26).
- In January, Katie '13 and Julia '14 Reinprecht retired from the United States National Field Hockey team.
- The two sisters retire as two-time Olympians, helping the U.S. to fifth place in the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since the 1996 summer games in Atlanta. They also won two gold medals at the Pan American Games (2011, 2015). Wrapping up their careers, Katie finished with 166 caps while Julia had 154 caps.
- Kathleen Sharkey '13 helped the national squad to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup in mid-August. She scored five times, leading the tournament in scoring.
- Princeton continues to be well-represented with USA Field Hockey as four Tigers were named to the U.S. U-21 National Team and two more to the National Development Squad.
- Maddie Bacskai, Julianna Tornetta, Sophia Tornetta and Elise Wong were picked to the U-21 squad while Cat Caro '17 and Ryan McCarthy were selected to the development team. Princeton's four representatives on the U-21 team are the most in the country.
