Wrestling Heads To Purdue For Two More Top-25 Opponents Sunday
January 05, 2018 | Wrestling
After an impressive eighth-place performance at the 55th Midlands Championships, the Princeton wrestling team will head back to Big 10 country for a pair of Sunday duals against ranked opponents. The Tigers, who opened the season by taking on three Top-10 opponents, will take on #24 Purdue and #8 Michigan inside Holloway Gymnasium in West Lafayette, Ind.
Both matches will be streamed live on both BTN2Go and FloWrestling Pro.
Princeton (0-3) lost December matches to #1 Ohio State, #5 Lehigh and #10 Virginia Tech, but that competition prepared the Tigers for the loaded Midlands Championships, where the Tigers sent one wrestler (Jonathan Schleifer) to the finals, three more to the medal podium (Matthew Kolodzik, Mike D'Angelo, and Patrick Brucki) and finished eighth overall with a program-record 73 points. While Schleifer came within an overtime takedown of Princeton's first Midlands title, it was Brucki who may have had the most head-turning win; he scored a 7-4 decision over fifth-ranked Jake Smith of West Virginia during the consolation round.
Princeton vs. #24 Purdue
The Tigers will open at 11 am against seventh-ranked Purdue, which is 4-1 on the season and finished one spot ahead of the Tigers at Midlands. Princeton is 0-2 all-time against Purdue, including a 37-6 Purdue victory early in the 2012 season.
One match to watch in the morning dual could come at 141, where Princeton junior Pat D'Arcy could face Nate Limmex for the second time in two weeks; Limmex knocked D'Arcy out of the championship bracket at Midlands with a tight 2-1 quarterfinal win. There could also be matchups between Midlands placewinners at both 165 (Schleifer, 2nd vs Jacob Morrissey, 7th) and 197 (Brucki, 5th vs. Christian Brunner, 3rd).
Princeton vs. #8 Michigan
Following a Big 10 showdown between Purdue and Michigan at 1:00, Princeton will take on the eighth-ranked Wolverines at 3 pm in the final match of the day. This will be the first dual match between the two schools in more than 85 years; the Wolverines posted a 21-15 victory in the only other meeting, which took place in Princeton on Jan. 13, 1930.
Michigan could start as many as five wrestlers ranked in the latest InterMat Top 10, including heavyweight Adam Coon, who is currently ranked second and is looking to pick up his 100th win this weekend. D'Angelo, coming off a strong fourth-place performance at Midlands, could face another top opponent in fifth-ranked Alec Pantaleo.
What's Next
Princeton's next road trip won't be quite as long as the current one. The Tigers will make the short trip up Rt. 1 to take on Mercer County rival Rider, currently ranked 22nd, in a 1 pm match on Saturday, Jan. 13, and then the Tigers will return home for a 5 pm match against Franklin & Marshall on the Ivy League Network.
