Cannady Joins 1,000 Point Club as Quakers Slip Past Tigers
January 06, 2018 | Men's Basketball
What had been the longest winning streak for the Princeton men's basketball team against rival Penn came to an end Saturday afternoon at The Palestra.
The 76-70 Tiger defeat came as junior Devin Cannady scored 21 points to become the 33rd member of Princeton's 1,000-point club, now with 1,018 to stand 32nd in program history. Princeton's win streak had been eight against the Quakers, and the defeat also ends Princeton's 16-game Ivy League winning streak, 18 including the two games in the Ivy League Tournament at The Palestra.
Princeton scored the first five points of the game before Penn had the next six and soon added a 10-0 run to take a 21-11 lead just past the midway point of the opening half. The Quakers led by as many as 13 before the break, and for the rest of the first half and leading up to the halfway point of the second, Princeton got no closer than five points.
The Tigers put together a 7-0 run that cut the Penn lead to three at 54-51 on an Amir Bell bucket with 10 minutes to go and were within three again just more than two minutes later at 56-53, but Penn answered each time and didn't let Princeton closer than three until Sebastian Much converted an and-one chance to pull the Tigers within 70-68 with 1:37 to go.
But, a Quaker offensive rebound on Penn's next possession led to two Darnell Foreman free throws with 60 seconds left to put Penn up four at 72-68, and despite a Devin Cannady drive to cut the deficit back to two, Penn's A.J. Brodeur answered with a basket to put it back to four with 29 seconds left, and an empty Tiger possession the next time down all but sealed it for the Quakers.
Cannady's 21 led four Tigers in double figures along with Amir Bell's 12, Sebastian Much's 11 and Myles Stephens' 10. Ryan Betley's 21 led five Quakers in double figures, with Betley scoring 19 of those 21 before halftime.
Penn ended up shooting 51.9 percent for the game, outdoing Princeton's 45.5 percent overall and 7 of 21 (.333) from 3.
