Volleyball Sweeps Penn, Set For Nationally Televised First-Place Showdown Next Friday At Yale
October 19, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
When the Oct. 26th showdown between Princeton and Yale was selected for a national broadcast on ESPNU, the hope was that matchup would play a big role in the Ivy League race. Princeton did its part to assure that importance on Friday, as the Tigers posted a 3-0 sweep of Penn inside Dillon Gym to move to 7-1 in the Ivy League. Should Yale win a home match this Saturday against Brown, the Bulldogs would also be 7-1 for that match, and it's possible that no other Ivy League team would have a better than .500 record in league play.
Yes, that match is going to mean plenty.
Princeton didn't want to allow the upset-minded Quakers any optimism Friday, and it took care of business early. Three Tigers reached double-digit kills, including both Devon Peterkin (11 kills, .500) and Maggie O'Connell (11 kills, .667), while sophomore Alexa Underwood added 10 kills, six digs and a pair of aces in the 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 victory. Princeton hit .414 as a team, thanks in part to a .583 percentage from sophomore middle Clare Lenihan (8-1-12).
Princeton, which has won its last three matches and is undefeated at home, will try to match its 2017 efforts next Friday night when it heads to Yale for a 6 pm match on ESPNU. Princeton had gone winless in New Haven between 2008-2016, but it won in the regular season and returned to Yale for the Ivy playoff, which the Tigers won in three impressive sets.

Junior setter Jessie Harris, the Ivy League leader in assists, had 40 Friday night to go along with seven digs and three service aces. Peterkin, who shared the team lead in both kills and aces, also led Princeton with nine digs, while freshman libero Cameron Dames added eight. Senior Caroline Sklaver added six kills and three blocks in the win.Clare Lenihan puts away her 8th kill of the night to lead the Tigers to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 win over Penn.
