Tigers Shut Out Harvard, Vault to First in the Ivy
October 20, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Saturday's 3-0 win over Harvard countered Columbia's win Friday night to put the Princeton men's soccer team back in first place in the Ivy with three games to go.
Princeton, with 10 Ivy standings points as the last league-unbeaten team in the Ivy, stands one point in front of both Columbia and Cornell, which beat Brown Saturday to keep pace.
First-half goals from Gaby Paniagua and Kevin O'Toole sparked the Tigers to the win as Princeton outshot the Crimson 23-11 overall. Jacob Schachner made two saves to secure the shutout, his fifth of the season.
The win was Princeton's first over Harvard since 2015, with a tie last year in Cambridge and a 3-2 loss two years ago at home. Princeton's last win over Harvard on campus came the year before, a 3-2 win in 2014.
Paniagua at last made the pressure the Tigers were putting on the Crimson pay off, taking a pass into the box from O'Toole and chipping it past Harvard keeper Matt Freese with nearly 28 minutes left before the half, and with only 100 seconds before the break, Sean McSherry and Frankie DeRosa exchanged passes after a throw-in, with McSherry finding O'Toole to power it in from 25 yards out.
O'Toole made it 3-0 less than four minutes into the second half, getting hold of a ball that Benjamin Martin carried into the box before being tangled up with a Harvard defender. O'Toole was on the spot to fire it in for his first multi-goal game in his season-plus with the Tigers, as well as a career-high five points.
