The Princeton men's cross country team delivered the first Ivy League title to Old Nassau this afternoon as the Tigers repeated as Ivy Heps champions with their 20th title in program history.
No. 28 ranked Princeton posted a score of 30 as its top five went 2-4-5-6-13.
"Defending a title is never easy," head coach Jason Vigilante said. "We have a great deal of respect for our Ivy League opponents and we knew if we wanted to win today we would need to run hard. I'm so proud of the effort our men put fourth, four runners in the top six is special. This is a direct reflection of how hard these young men have worked over the past few years and their positive approach to racing."
Junior Conor Lundy claimed second place with an 8k time of 24:31.0. Lundy was leading a straight pack of five Tigers at the mile split as he had a time of 4:56.7. At three-miles he had a split time of 15:03.5. Lundy hasn't finished out of the top three at an Ivy Heps – taking third as both a freshman and a sophomore as he captures his third first-team All-Ivy League honor.
Junior Gannon Willcutts, sophomore Matt Grossman and senior Jeremy Spiezio quickly made up the top four going 4-5-6 for the Tigers at 24:32.7, 24:44.2 and 24:47.4, respectively. Grossman led all runners at the three-mile mark, with Willcutts third and Spiezio seventh.
The trio join Lundy with first-team All-Ivy League honors.
Sophomore Ed Trippas was the final scorer, taking 13th, at 24:57.7 to take second-team honors.
Sophomore Eli Krahn and junior Viraj Deokar were five seconds apart in taking the sixth and seventh runners spots.
Princeton now has its sights set on the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 9. The Tigers won the race a year ago and are currently ranked first in the region.
