The Princeton men's cross country team looks to retain its regional title on Friday at the 2018 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Penn State. The men's 10k race will begin at 1 p.m., on the Blue & White course.
The top two teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be hed No. 17 in Madison, Wisc.
The Ivy League Heps champions are the top team in the Mid-Atlantic Region and is ranked No. 25 in the nation. The next best team according to the rankings is Georgetown with the Hoyas receiving votes in the national poll. Villanova, Penn and Penn State round out the top five.
Princeton opened the season with a race on this course and is familiar with not only the terrain but it's opponents.
The crown has won by just three different teams with the Tigers winning in 2017 and 2010. Georgetown has won nine times and Villanova twice.
In addition to the top two teams, the top four runners on non-qualifying teams will earn at-large bids to the NCAAs.
Leading the way for the Tigers is junior Conor Lundy. Last year he was fourth overall and was third as a freshman to earn all-region honors and make his way to the NCAA Championships each season. Lundy has been the top finisher for the Tigers all season and most recently was the runner-up at Heps.
Junior Gannon Willcutts, sophomore Matt Grossman and senior captain Jeremy Spiezio should follow. The trio went 4-5-6 at Ivy Heps last weekend. This will be the third Regional for Willcutts - he was No. 5 runner in 2016 and No. 3 in 2017 taking eighth place overall. Spiezeio has had a healthy season and looks to score after being the team's No. 7 as both a sophomore and a freshman.
The final scorer spot will most likely be sophomore Ed Trippas, who was the fifth scorer at Heps two weeks ago. Other potential scorers include juniors Eli Krahn, Viraj Deokar and Perrin Hagge.
