Brown Rallies to Defeat Women's Soccer Team, 3-2
October 06, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Though the Princeton women's soccer team had a two-goal lead before 17 minutes were gone Saturday night on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium, it wasn't enough to withstand a Brown rally that delivered the Bears the final three goals of the game for a 3-2 win in a pivotal Ivy League contest.
The Tigers entered their game knowing they'd need three points just to join a four-way tie for first in the Ivy. But, Penn, Dartmouth and Harvard will remain tied atop the league heading into next week at 2-0-1 with seven points, one point in front of Columbia and three points in front of Princeton. The Tigers have Columbia, Harvard, Cornell and Penn left on the docket, with Harvard and Penn at home.
Princeton benefited from an own goal in the 13th minute to take the lead. Lucy Rickerson delivered a free kick into the box, but a Brown defender's header sent it skyward and arcing into the goal to get Princeton on the board. Mimi Asom then made it a 2-0 Princeton lead when she rocketed one in less than four minutes later.
Despite Princeton outshooting Brown 19-6 overall and 7-4 on goal, that was all Princeton got. Brown halved the lead three minutes before the half when a Lauren Hinton throw-in and a Maesyn G'Bye quick touch found Rebecca Rosen, who sent it in to end Princeton's shutout streak at 441:59.
Princeton's lead stood only until four minutes were gone in the second half. Abby Carchio sent a free kick from just outside the 18 toward the net, and Star White redirected it in to tie it up. The deadlock remained until 11-and-a-half minutes were left in regulation, when Claire Myers corralled a loose ball and sent it past Tiger keeper Natalie Grossi for the lead and the eventual win.
Mimi Asom's goal was her 10th of the season, making her just the second player in program history, along with former teammate Tyler Lussi '17, to have at least three 10-goal seasons. Lussi, the program's all-time leading scorer, had four. The goal also moved Asom up a spot on Princeton's career points and goals list, tying her with Emily Behncke '06 for fourth with 90 points and tying her with Linda DeBoer '86 with 41 goals.
Princeton will head to New York next Sunday to face Columbia in a 3 p.m. start on ESPNUÂ as the Ivy season continues.
