Morokhovich's First Career Goal is Golden
October 09, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Junior Cole Morokhovich's first career goal couldn't be sweeter, coming in the 92nd minute to lift Princeton to a 1-0 win over St. John's on Tuesday night. Primarily playing an outside back position this season, Morokhovich was switched up to the wing position after 90 minutes of play and the decision paid off.
Michael Osei Wusu took a throw-in and getting it to Gaby Paniagua just outside the 18-yard box. Paniagua used a head flick to put the ball into the box for Morokhovich who stepped around his defender and split a pair with an arcing shot into the opposite corner of the net.
Princeton began the game dominating possession and at the close of the half had outshot St. John's 9-1.
The Johnnies first shot and only shot on goal came in the 84th minute and was grabbed by Mohamed Abdelhamid making this first career appearance in goal. The junior not only earned the start but the shutout this evening.
Paniagua had two early chances to put the Tigers on the board with one shot hitting the post in the 3rd minute and one being pushed just outside the post in the 23rd by netminder Tyron Matuta. Senior Jeremy Colvin had back-to-back chances with one shot being saved after Matuta came out to play the ball leaving Colvin with an open net before a defender came for the slide tackle on the ball. Matuta again got in trouble by coming out to play the ball and nearly gave one up to Kevin O'Toole in the same fashion in the 75th. O'Toole had another look in the 89th but put a little too much bend on the ball - though it resulted in the Tigers' 13th corner kick of the game.
Princeton outshot St. John's 19-5 with a 9-1 differential in shots on goal. Corner kicks fell 13-2 in favor of the Tigers who are now 5-1-1 in their last seven matches.
The Tigers return to Ivy League action on Saturday taking on Columbia in New York.
