#1 Kolodzik Avenges Midlands Loss, Joins Stefanik/Brucki As Winners in Dual Loss At #3 Iowa
November 16, 2018 | Wrestling
Top-ranked 149-pounder Matthew Kolodzik avenged a loss at the 2017 Midlands Championships, while teammates Patrick Brucki and Travis Stefanik both added victories in front of 7,940 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The third-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes used a big early surge to grab early control in a 31-10 team victory over the 17th-ranked Tigers in the 2017-18 dual debut for Princeton.
Kolodzik, whose only match this fall was a 12-7 win over #9 Mitch Finesilver at the NWCA All-Star Classic, faced 12th-ranked Pat Lugo for his first official match of the season, and it was a thriller. A double-leg takedown gave Kolodzik the only two points of the first period, but Lugo countered with a takedown of his own in the third to even the score at 3-3. Kolodzik, whose third-period heroics carried him to a third-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships, countered with a reversal to regain the lead, and added a late takedown to grab the 7-4 win.
Stefanik, one of four Princeton freshmen in the starting lineup tonight, grabbed total control of his 174-pound match against Myles Wilson early with a takedown and a four-point near fall. He added two more takedowns and a reversal to build the advantage, which would eventually end with a 15-3 major decision. Seventh-ranked Brucki nearly added a major of his own, though he was also in full control of his 197-pound match against Connor Corbin. Brucki, one of three Tigers to win their weight classes at the Princeton Open two weeks ago, had two takedowns in the first period en route to a 10-3 decision over Corbin.
Iowa was loaded with top-20 wrestlers throughout its lineup, and it took advantage of its lightweight strength to open a 17-0 lead early. Reigning NCAA champion Spencer Lee showed why he is the top-ranked wrestler at 125 by posting an 18-2 technical fall over 15th-ranked Princeton freshman Patrick Glory, and Iowa followed with second-period falls in the next two matches. Kolodzik ended the run at 149, and Princeton freshman Quincy Monday had an impressive showing against #13 Kaleb Young at 157. Monday actually had a pair of first-period takedowns against Young, a fifth-place finisher at the 2017 Midlands. Young got a reversal to get back to 4-3, and then broke a third-period tie with a late takedown in a 7-4 win.
Princeton will continue a trip through Big Ten country Sunday at 1 pm ET (12 pm local) when it takes on Wisconsin in its first ever trip to the Field House. The match will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
