McQuigge Stops Penalty Shot as Princeton Sets Program Record
December 30, 2018 | Women's Ice Hockey
Sophomore Rachel McQuigge stopped a penalty shot 35 seconds into overtime to preserve the tie and give Princeton its 13th straight game without a loss. The streak is a program record, surpassing the 12 set by the 2015-16 NCAA tournament team.
As the Warriors were trying to jam the puck in, a Tiger was called for closing her hand on the puck in the crease. After a video review the call stood and Paige Voight came out to take the penalty shot - facing McQuigge in her second penalty shot of the season. She tracked Voight the whole way and denied her on the right pipe to keep Princeton's streak alive.
After 57 minutes of scoreless hockey it looked as though the teams would head into overtime deadlocked at 0-0.
Freshman Sarah Fillier had other ideas as she net her fifth goal of the season at 17:03 on a transition the other way. Maggie Connors and Karlie Lund helped establish possession in front of the benches before Lund slipped the puck to Fillier down the middle.
Merrimack wasn't going away quietly, as they pulled goaltender Samantha Ridgewell for the extra attacker with 1:31 remaining. Gabby Jones was able to net the equalizer redirected a shot from the point by Chloe Cook at 18:50.
McQuigge made 23 saves to continue her own personal unbeaten streak of 12.
Ridgewell finished the game with 40 saves.
These two teams will battle it out again tomorrow in game two of the series at 3 p.m.
