21 Points in Top-20 Win Gets Cannady Ivy Weekly, National Honors
December 31, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Senior Devin Cannady shone brightly on a stage opposite a top-20 team and with a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer describing his exploits, and among his rewards is sharing Ivy League Player of the Week recognition.
Cannady dropped 21 points last Saturday to help lead Princeton to a 67-66 win over then-No. 17 Arizona State, Princeton's second top-25 win under coach Mitch Henderson '98 and first top-20 win since Henderson was in uniform, in Princeton's 1996 NCAA Tournament-opening win over defending NCAA champion UCLA, which was also ranked 17th by the AP.
Cannady's efforts also earned him Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week honors, given to the top mid-major player in the nation for the week.
Cannady has scored at least 20 points in seven of his 10 games this season after missing the first two games of the new campaign to injury. That has helped lift his career total to 1,426 points entering Saturday's Ivy-opening game in Jadwin against Penn and make him a candidate to become Princeton's first player in 47 years to end the season averaging 20 points a game. Now eighth, the senior is also on pace to become Princeton's second-leading career scorer behind Bill Bradley '65, and now third, Cannady is also on pace to break the career 3-pointer record held by Brian Earl '99, now with 262 3s to stand 19 back of Earl.
Beyond his scoring in the game, which came on 7-of-16 shooting from the field and 5 of 12 from 3, Cannady, also a 94 percent free-throw shooter this season and 91 percent for his career, upped his season's rebounding average to 5.7 by grabbing nine boards against the Sun Devils. He also dished a season-high four assists, including this behind-the-back pass to Sebastian Much for a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock buzzer and keep Princeton on ASU's heels. Ted Robinson and Naismith Hall of Famer Bill Walton P'01 are on the call for the Pac-12 Network.

The honor is Cannady's fifth of his career and second of the season, along with the Nov. 26 Ivy weekly award.
