Despite D'Angelo, Kolodzik Victories, Cornell Claims 16th Straight Ivy Wrestling Title
February 10, 2018 | Wrestling
The Cornell wrestling team continued the most dominant run for any Ivy League team Saturday, as it completed a Penn-Princeton sweep with a 34-8 victory over the Tigers Saturday night in Dillon Gym. That win, combined with a 32-9 win over Penn Saturday afternoon, clinched the outright Ivy title for the Big Red. Princeton got wins from two ranked starters in #12 Matthew Kolodzik and #17 Mike D'Angelo, but Cornell's strength throughout the lineup was enough to earn the win.
Cornell got the start it wanted, as Noah Baughman was able to turn Tiger sophomore Matteo DeVincenzo into a cradle midway through the second period to score a fall at the 4:34 mark. DeVincenzo was close on a shot in the opening period, but Baughman fought it off and scored a takedown of his own to grab momentum in the match.
Princeton freshman Jonathan Gomez took the mat at 133 and battled Chaz Tucker through a scoreless first period, but Tucker used takedowns in both the second and third periods to post a 6-2 decision.
Fourth-ranked Yianni Diakomihalis took control of his 141-pound match against Princeton's Jordan Reich, scoring multiple takedowns in the opening period to grab an 8-2 lead. Reich fought off multiple turns, but Diakomihalis would eventually get the Princeton senior to his back and grab the fall at 4:44.
Princeton needed a win, and sophomore All-American Matthew Kolodzik was happy to oblige. The aggressor for the whole match, Kolodzik scored two takedowns in the first period and never let Koll get in the match during a 7-4 victory.
Senior Jonathan Schleifer also made the move up to 174, and he battled Brandon Womack in a thriller. The three-time NCAA qualifier from Princeton opened the match with two takedowns, but Womack countered with one of his own and used a long ride to even the match 4-4 after one period. Womack escaped to open the 2nd, and the duo scrambled for the rest of the period. With Womack close to a 1:00 of ride time, Schleifer took neutral in the third and forced the action for 2:00, but could never get the takedown he needed. He drew one stalling call, but Womack fended off the attacks and held on for a 5-4 victory.
11th-ranked Max Dean was dominant at 184 for the 16-0 technical fall, and then the lone Top-20 matchup of the evening took the mat, and it lived up to the expectations. Third-ranked Big Red freshman Ben Darmstadt took the mat with a 25-1 record, but 17th-ranked Princeton freshman Patrick Brucki ignited the crowd with a quick takedown. Darmstadt quickly reversed and rode out the period, an unfortunate turn of events that would repeat itself later. Brucki scored a takedown in the second for a 4-3 lead, and then he opened the third with another one to lead 6-4. He got too high on his ride, and Darmstadt was able to reverse and grab control. A stalling call and two very late back points ultimately led Darmstadt to a 10-6 win in what could be an exciting rivalry in the Ivy League for years to come.
Cornell heavyweight Jeramy Sweany closed the match with a 9-0 major, and the Big Red clinched its 16th straight Ivy League title with a 34-6 victory over Princeton. The Tigers will return home next weekend for home matches against both Penn (Saturday, 12 pm, Dillon Gym) and Rutgers (Sunday, 1 pm, Jadwin Gym).

Co-captain Mike D'Angelo was not about to let that energy leave Dillon Gym. He won a wild scramble right off the opening whistle for a quick 2-0 lead over Fredy Stroker at 157. What seemed like it could be a wild match from there settled significantly, as both wrestlers fought off numerous shots and scrambles over the next 6+ minutes. D'Angelo added a second-period escape to go up 3-0, and Stroker couldn't manage a takedown after taking neutral in the third in a 3-0 D'Angelo win.Matthew Kolodzik with the 1st period takedown. Princeton moved sophomore Leonard Merkin to 165 to face 18th-ranked Jon Jay Chavez, who was returning after a long injury layoff. Chavez got an early takedown and was able to turn Merkin just before the whistle for two back points.
