Princeton Closes Season Strong, Tops Yale 8-1 To Finish Third At 2018 Howe Cup
February 18, 2018 | Women's Squash
It may not have been the match Princeton wanted to play, but the Tiger women's squash team didn't allow that fact to impact the way it competed. Princeton defeated Yale 8-1 to finish in third place at the 2018 Howe Cup Championships, and now the Tigers will turn their attention to the CSA individual championships in two weeks.
Princeton, which fell in a heartbreaking 6-3 semifinal to Trinity Saturday afternoon, came out and swept the opening shift against Yale. Freshmen Grace Doyle and Emme Leonard joined sophomore Madison Soukup as 3-0 winners, which opened a strong early lead. The Tigers clinched the match by the end of the middle shift, as both sophomore Morgan Steelman and junior Isabel Hirshberg added 3-1 wins for Princeton.
Sophomore Samantha Chai added a win at #4, and then senior co-captains Olivia Fiechter and Kira Keating made sure they both ended their team careers on a positive note. Both claimed 3-1 wins at the #1 and #7 spots, respectively, to secure the 8-1 win. That matches Princeton's result against Yale from the regular season, a win that helped the Tigers finish second during the Ivy League season.
This is Princeton's first Top-3 finish at the Howe Cup since 2015, when the Tigers knocked off Penn 5-4.
