Princeton Rallies for 3-3 Draw at No. 10 Clarkson
February 23, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Senior Eric Robinson scored twice and sophomore Jackson Cressey had assists on all three goals as the Tigers rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie No. 10 Clarkson 3-3 at Cheel Arena on Friday night. Freshman Ryan Ferland stopped 37 shots in the draw for Princeton.
The Tigers entered the game with the fifth-best power-play in the country, converting 26.3 percent of its chances but knew it would have a battle with the eighth ranked penalty kill of Clarkson (19-8-6, 11-5-5). Princeton (12-12-4, 9-10-2) was able to convert on its second power-play opportunity as junior Ryan Kuffner scored his 24th goal of the season, at 10:37 of the first period.
Kuffner, who is second in the nation in goals per game, went back door on a drive by junior Max Véronneau. Véronneau himself ranks second in the nation in assists per game. The pair are 3-4 in the nation in points per game. Cressey earned his first assist after corralling a rebound to the right of goaltender Jake Kielly and finding Véronneau at the left point.
Sheldon Rempal answered back with a power-play goal less than four minutes later, from Terrance Amorosa and Kelly Summers.
Those would be the only power-play goals of the games, with Princeton going 1 for 6 and Clarkson 1 for 5.
The Golden Knights took a 3-1 lead with two goals in the first 7:24 of the second period. Devin Brosseau buried a Rempal pass back door 41 seconds off the opening puck drop and Josh Dickinson expanded the lead with a wirster from the top of the face off circle that went over the shoulder of Ferland at 7:24.
Robinson was quick to respond, just 1:11 later, when he picked up a Cressey backhanded pass and threw it on the cage where it deflected and snuck past Kielly. Robinson used his speed to net the game-tying goal as Princeton quickly transition with Véronneau feeding Cressey and Cressey finding Robinson ready for the breakout, as his two men trailed behind him as he flipped the puck past the mitt of Kielly.
Kielly finished the game with 24 saves including three in the overtime period which all came from the Tigers' top scoring line of Kuffner-Riche-Véronneau.
Ferland made five clutch saves in the final five minutes as Princeton can stake its claim for home ice in the ECAC playoffs tomorrow with a win at St. Lawrence. Game time is at 7 p.m.
