February 24, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass – The Harvard Crimson (16-9, 8-4 Ivy) made 10 three-pointers in a 72-58 victory over the Princeton Tigers (20-5, 10-2 Ivy) at Lavietes Pavilion on Saturday evening.
Â
Abby Meyers dropped in a game-high 17 points, adding six rebounds. Bella Alarie had five assists and two steals in the loss.
Â
Trailing by two, 10-8, Meyers knocked down her first trey, but Harvard countered with a three-pointer on the next possession. Two trips down later, the freshman, again, sank a trey, but the Crimson did not let up, retaking the lead. The two Ivy foes combined for 10 lead changes in the first quarter, but it was the Crimson that took a 17-16 advantage into the second frame.
Â
Princeton made three-pointers on back-to-back possessions as the second quarter got underway to go in front, 22-17. This time it was Harvard's turn to go on a run as it posted the next eight points, taking a 25-22 lead into the break.
Â
In front by four, 32-28, Harvard snagged 10 consecutive points before two free throws from Meyers stemmed the tide (42-30) with 3:28 to go in the third stanza. The Tigers closed within 11, but the Crimson registered five straight points to complete the quarter (52-36).
Â
A three-pointer from Tia Weledji (56-43) as the clock ticked under eight minutes would be the closest Princeton got in the fourth stanza. Harvard led by as many as 21 in the game. Sydney Skinner led the Crimson with 16 points while Katie Benzan (13), Madeline Raster (12) and Jeannie Boehm (10) also scored in double figures.
Â
Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Princeton holds a one-game lead at the top of the Ivy League over Penn (9-3). Harvard (8-4) and Yale (8-4) sit in the third and fourth positions. Dartmouth is mathematically alive in fifth at 6-6.
Â
The Tigers can clinch the No. 1 seed in the Ivy League Tournament with one victory next weekend. They host Brown (Mar. 2) and Yale (Mar. 3). The Brown game gets underway at 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on the Ivy League Network and ESPN3.
