Highest-Scoring Game in Program History Sees Brown Top Princeton in OT
February 03, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Jadwin Gym Saturday night saw the highest-scoring game in Princeton men's basketball history. Unfortunately, though, the win didn't go to the Tigers.
A contested 3-pointer for Brown's Desmond Cambridge fell with five seconds to go in overtime, tipping the game to the Bears, 102-100.
It was the first time in Princeton program history that both teams scored 100 points in a game, and it outdid, by two points, Princeton's 118-82 win over Wichita State in the 1965 NCAA third-place game for the highest combined score in a Princeton game.
That third-place game saw Bill Bradley '65 score 58 points, and although no player reached quite that number, Cambridge ended up with 32, the most for any Princeton opponent since Columbia's Maodo Lo scored 37 on March 7, 2015. Princeton won that one, 85-83.
Devin Cannady led five Tigers in double figures with 27 points, one off his season high and two off his career high, and Myles Stephens, with 23, Amir Bell, with 12, Sebastian Much, with 12, and Aaron Young, with 10, made it the first time since Jan. 3, 2016, in an 89-59 win at Hampton, that five Tigers finished in double figures.
Princeton led by seven with four minutes to go in the second half at 85-78 and still by four at 89-85 with 36 seconds to go. Brown trimmed that deficit to one with a Cambridge triple on its next trip down the floor, and after Amir Bell split from the line with 20 seconds to go, a Tiger foul sent Cambridge to the line with five seconds left. The Bears rookie drained both and then denied Stephens' drive to the rim for a go-ahead bucket at the other end for the Tigers, sending the game to overtime.
Princeton led twice in the overtime period, last when Brown fouled Stephens to send the Tiger junior to the line with 15 seconds to go. Stephens hit both to give Princeton a 100-98 lead, but Cambridge answered with the go-ahead 3 and Princeton's court-length inbounds pass didn't connect, giving the ball back to Brown. A Brandon Anderson split from the stripe cemented the final score.
Postgame Notes
• Princeton shot .551, marking the 13th straight game the Tigers have shot at least 40 percent from the field, the seventh time this season they've made at least half their tries from the field, and the highest field goal percentage in a loss since the season-opening Butler defeat on Nov. 12 (.556).
• It was the second time this season Princeton scored 100 points. The Tigers scored 103 in the win at USC on Dec. 19.
• It was the ninth time this season Princeton made at least 10 3s, hitting 11.
• Princeton had eight turnovers, one off its season-low total.
• Brown's .579 field goal clip was the highest for a Tiger opponent since Stony Brook shot .635 in a 91-77 Tiger loss on Long Island on Dec. 5, 2015. It was the highest for an Ivy opponent since Yale shot .583 in an 81-73 Tiger loss in Jadwin on Feb. 14, 2015. That was also the last time Princeton lost a home Ivy game, snapping a 19-game winning streak.
• Brown's 13 3s were the second-most for a Tiger opponent this season. Miami (Fla.) made 14 in an 80-52 Tiger loss on Dec. 2, 2017. Harvard, in a 73-69 Tiger win on March 3, 2017 in Jadwin, was the last Ivy team to make 13 3s against Princeton.
• Brown's 23 free throws made were the second-most for a Tiger opponent this season. Only BYU's 25, in a 65-56 win on Nov. 15 in Jadwin, were more. Brown's 33 free throw tries were the most since BYU tried 41 in an 82-73 Tiger loss on Nov. 14, 2016 at BYU. Cornell went 31 of 36 from the stripe in Ithaca in a 68-60 Tiger loss on Feb. 7, 2015 in the last time an Ivy foe tried that many free throws. Yale, which made 26 in an 81-60 Tiger loss in New Haven on Feb. 27, 2015, was the last Ivy team to make as many as 23 free throws against Princeton.
• It was the fourth time this season, and first since the aforementioned USC game, that both Princeton and its opponent made at least half their field goal tries. It was the third time this season, also for the first time since the USC game, that both teams made at least 10 3s.Â
• Devin Cannady played all 45 minutes for the second time in Princeton's three OT games this season (42 vs. Yale, 45 at USC).Â
• Cannady's 27 points lifted him three spots to 19th place on Princeton's all-time scoring list, now with 1,110 points. He remains sixth with 199 career 3-pointers made.Â
• The loss snapped Princeton's eight-game winning streak overall against Brown and the team's seven-game win streak in Jadwin against the Bears. Brown's last win in Jadwin came in 2010, and it was only the sixth time Brown has won at Princeton.
• Rookie Sebastian Much's eight rebounds were a career high, surpassing the five he had against Monmouth on Dec. 12 in Jadwin.
• The weekend marked Princeton's first back-to-back OT games since going long against Brown and Harvard on Feb. 16 and Feb. 22, 2008. Princeton had never had two OT games in the same Ivy League weekend.
