Stephens Records Double-Double, But Penn Tops Princeton
February 06, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Penn scored the first 11 points of the game, and though the Princeton men's basketball team led briefly late in the first half and were within two early in the second, Penn left Jadwin with an 82-65 win Tuesday night in Jadwin.
The outcome keeps Penn perfect in the Ivy at 6-0 while Princeton stands tied for third at 3-3 with Columbia and Brown. Harvard, Friday's opponent in Massachusetts, is second at 5-1.
Tiger junior Myles Stephens earned his second career double-double, putting in 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, with both double-doubles coming against Penn and the other in the Ivy League Tournament semifinal last year. The 12 rebounds tied a career high set Dec. 23 against Middle Tennessee in Hawaii.
Princeton clawed out of the early hole with a 9-0 run that brought the Tigers to within 25-23 on a Myles Stephens bucket with 7:48 before the half. The Tigers took their first lead with 2:19 before the break when Devin Cannady converted an and-1 opportunity for a 31-30 lead, but Penn answered that with eight straight points on the way to a 40-35 halftime edge.
The Tigers were within two at 44-42 less than three minutes into the second half, but Penn took off on a 9-0 run and the Tigers weren't able to get closer than six the rest of the way. The Quakers led by 10 with six-plus minutes to go at 67-57 before going on a 13-2 run to break it open late.
The Quakers outshot Princeton 53.6 percent to 40.4 percent from the field, making 15 of 16 from inside the arc in the second half. The Tigers put up 25 3-pointers, but just seven fell with five Tigers splitting those.
Princeton will hit the road for a full Ivy weekend for the first time this season, heading to Harvard Friday on ESPNU and Dartmouth Saturday on the Ivy League Network and Eleven Sports. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
