Fiechter Claims Thriller At #1, But Harvard Extends Win Streak With Home Victory Over Princeton
February 03, 2018 | Women's Squash
All-America senior Olivia Fiechter picked up one of the biggest individual wins of her already-impressive career, but the depth of the reigning Howe Cup champion Harvard Crimson was too much for Princeton in a Saturday showdown between the two unbeaten teams in college squash. Harvard was able to sweep through the opening shift and carried that momentum into an 8-1 home victory over Princeton, the 47th straight win for the Crimson.
Fiechter, who suffered her first loss of the collegiate season Wednesday night against Penn's Reeham Sedky, moved to 10-1 at the #1 position with an impressive display of shotmaking against Harvard's Sabrina Sobhy, the former Ivy League Player of the Year. Fiechter made an impressive opening statement with a 14-12 win in the opener, and then hit a perfect drop shot to the front left corner to pick up an 11-9 win in the third. Sobhy bounced back in the fourth, but Fiechter grabbed the lead in the fifth and kept the advantage as she worked her way to the finish line. A short forehand that stayed tight to the wall turned out to be the winner in an 11-8 fifth for Fiechter, who continues to shine after two injury-riddled seasons.
Princeton fought throughout the lineup and was able to grab a handful of games in other matches, including a strong 11-8 win in the opener at #2 for Raneem El Torky over Harvard's Georgina Kennedy. El Torky was close in both the second and third, but she ultimately fell in four games.
Both Samantha Chai and Madison Soukup also picked up games in their respective matches, though neither could make it to a fifth game.
Princeton will look to split the road weekend Sunday when it heads to Dartmouth for a noon start.
