Princeton Set To Host Pair, Will Honor 1978 EIWA Champions Prior To Saturday Match vs. #10 Cornell
February 07, 2018 | Wrestling
After wrestling seven of its last eight dual matches on the road, Princeton will close the 2017-18 regular season with four straight home showdowns, including a big pair against New York rivals this weekend. The Tigers will host Columbia Friday at 6 pm, and then will take on Ivy champion Cornell Saturday at 6 pm, and both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
Princeton (2-7, 1-1 Ivy) has dealt with injuries throughout the season, and they played a significant role in the Tigers' Ivy-opening weekend. Wrestling without four projected starters, Princeton used stellar efforts from a pair of freshmen to defeat Harvard 21-16 in Boston. Unfortunately, the Tigers weren't able to recreate that magic the following day, as Brown took advantage of a pair of major decisions in a 17-15 home win over Princeton.
While that loss stung, the Tigers returned home knowing there were still two weekends remaining in the league season, and a magical home pair this weekend in Dillon Gym would vault them right back into the race.
FRIDAY, 6 pm • Columbia (3-10) at Princeton
Fan Appreciation Night
Princeton has won four straight over Columbia, which has been led by two nationally ranked starters this season. Senior Markus Scheidel, a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier, is 12-1 on the season and is currently ranked 13th in the nation by InterMat. He could be set for a Top-20 showdown against 18th-ranked Princeton co-captain Mike D'Angelo, who missed last weekend's matches but could return by Friday night. Columbia also has the reigning EIWA champion ay heavyweight in senior Garrett Ryan, another three-time NCAA qualifier who is currently 23-4 on the season.

SATURDAY, 6 pm • Cornell (9-2) at Princeton
Orange Out // 1978 EIWA Champions Celebration Night
The 10th-ranked Cornell wrestling team has won 15 straight Ivy League titles, and a trio of nationally ranked freshmen are trying to secure a 16th title during a busy road weekend. Cornell, which faces Drexel Friday at 7 and Penn Saturday at noon, will head to Princeton Saturday night riding a 31-match win streak over the Tigers. Freshman Ben Sarmstadt is currently 23-1 on the season and is ranked third at 197, where he could face 17th-ranked Tiger freshman Patrick Brucki in one of the highlight matches of the dual. Cornell also has the nation's fourth-ranked 141-pounder in Yianni Diakomihalis (24-1), and the 11th-ranked 184-pounder in Max Dean.
The first 200 fans to the dual will receive a free Princeton wrestling t-shirt as part of an Orange Out, and the Tigers will also honor the 1978 EIWA championship team prior to the match. That Princeton team is one of only three Tiger squads to win the EIWA title, and it is also the most recent; since then, no Princeton team has finished as high at the EIWA championships as the 2017 team, which placed third.
