Princeton Gets First Win Of The Season Behind Strong Pitching From Gross

BETHESDA, Md. – Ben Gross went seven innings, allowing just two runs as the Princeton Tigers earned its first victory of the season with a 4-2 decision over the Georgetown Hoyas at Shirley Povich Field on Friday afternoon.

Princeton banged out six hits while Asher Lee-Tyson and Conor Nolan stole bases in the win. Gross scattered seven hits and struck out six in earning his fourth career victory. Eli Kimbell earned his first career save, throwing the last two innings of relief.

The Tigers got on the board early with a run in the first frame. Chris Davis struck out to lead off the game, but reached on a throwing error. He later came around to score on another throwing error. Freddy Achecar III's RBI double tied the score for Georgetown in the second inning.

Princeton retook the lead as Joseph Flynn touched home on a wild pitch in the third frame. The Tigers added on to their lead with a run-scoring groundout from Davis and RBI infield knock from Nolan in fourth, making it 4-1.

Gross threw three straight clean stanzas in the fourth, fifth and the seventh before he finished his day. In the seventh inning, Richie O'Reilly got the Hoyas within two as he singled home Achecar. One at-bat later, Georgetown crept closer on a fielder's choice, making it 4-3.

Flynn recorded its first hit of the day with a vital RBI single in top half of the ninth. Kimbell threw a perfect frame in the bottom of the ninth to give Princeton its first win of the year.

Eddie McCabe had a game-high three hits for the Hoyas while Achecar had two hits in the loss.

Princeton and Georgetown get back into action tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Ryan Smith and Andrew Gnazzo will be on the mound for the Tigers as they look to extend their winning streak.
