Georgetown Snags Series Split Against Princeton
March 18, 2018 | Baseball
BETHESDA, Md. – Despite 11 hits, the Princeton Tigers were defeated by the Georgetown Hoyas, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas managed a split of the four-game series.
Four different Tigers had multi-hit games while James Proctor and Keith Gabrielson combined for nine strikeouts in the loss.
Proctor allowed a batter to reach scoring position in the first inning, but got a groundout to end the frame. In the second, Georgetown loaded the bases, but a fielders' choice ended the threat.
Georgetown registered the game's first run on a wild pitch in the fourth. Later in the stanza, a RBI single from Austin Shirley and passed ball added on to the Hoyas' advantage, making it 3-0. The Tigers had a runner reach third base in the top of the fifth, but couldn't push him across.
With one out in the sixth stanza, back-to-back singles from Joseph Flynn and Sy Snedeker put runners on for pinch-hitter Max Machiorlette. The junior, in his first at-bat of the season, lined a base hit to center field that scored Flynn, getting the Tigers within two, 3-1.
The two teams exchanged runs as a hit-by-pitch gave Georgetown its fourth tally while a sacrifice fly from Conor Nolan set the score at 4-2. Princeton inched closer with a two-out run-producing single from David Harding in the eighth inning scored Ramzi Haddad, who tripled.
Ryan Davis provided a crucial insurance run for the Hoyas with a RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Princeton had a base runner reach in the top of the ninth, but couldn't rally. Davis had three hits to pace Georgetown's offense. Owen Lamon went six innings to earn the victory.
Princeton continues its Spring Break trip as it travels to Richmond tomorrow (Mar. 18). First pitch gets underway at 3 p.m.
