Lightweights Reclaim Murtaugh Cup, Follow With Fosburgh Cup Win At Night
March 24, 2018 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton men's lightweight rowing team opened its 2018 season in impressive fashion Saturday morning, edging Navy by 2.3 seconds to reclaim the Murtaugh Cup in Annapolis. It is the Tigers' 10th Murtaugh Cup win over the last 12 years, though it will return to Princeton after Navy won it in the 2017 opener.
That was Opening Day. Opening Night was just as successful for Princeton, which made the short trip to Georgetown and retained the Fosburgh Cup by just under five seconds. It marked the first time Princeton swept both the Murtaugh and Fosburgh Cups to open a season since 2015, a positive sign for the Tigers moving forward.
The Tiger 1V came into the weekend ranked third in the preseason poll, and it responded to a strong Navy effort with poise and resilience. Princeton took the win in 6:02.7, while Navy finished in 6:05.0 in the opening race for both squads. The Princeton 1V featured two members of every class, as well as a freshman coxswain in Sydney Edwards. Marcus Jonas and David Slear were other members of the Tiger Class of 2021 who had a winning debut in the varsity boat.
"Our team has great respect for the commitment and toughness of the Navy Midshipmen crews," said senior James Sincavage, a two-year veteran of the Princeton 1V. "Our varsity crew established a strong sense of confidence in each other going into today's test, and we are excited to build and improve in the coming weeks."
Princeton won each of the top three races, though all came by narrow margins. The 2V earned a win by 2.8 seconds, while the 3V defeated the Midshipmen by 3.7 seconds.
In the nightcap, Princeton retained the Fosburgh Cup in 5:49.7, nearly six full seconds ahead of the Hoyas. The closest race of the day came in the 2V, though it took place between a pair of Princeton boats. The Tiger 3V actually held off the 2V by .3 of a second — video replay was utilized — and both boats beat Georgetown by more than 13 seconds. Princeton also got a 4V win in the final race of a long and successful Princeton day.
Princeton will head to Overpeck Lake next weekend to take on Columbia in the second year of the Campbell Cup regatta.
