Second-Ranked Lightweights Compete For Campbell Cup Saturday At Columbia
March 29, 2018 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Princeton and Columbia raced in the inaugural Campbell Cup regatta last year, and the Tigers knocked off the then-reigning IRA champion Lions to keep the Cup in the Shea Rowing Center and grab some early momentum for the 2017 season.
In the second edition of this young series, Princeton is hoping to build on the momentum it already generated during an impressive opening weekend of the 2018 season.
The second-ranked Tigers, who moved up one spot in the latest USRowing Coaches Poll after a perfect 2-0 weekend, will head to Overpeck Park Saturday morning to face the sixth-ranked Lions. The regatta is set to begin with a 4V/5V race at 9 am, and then there will be a race every 20 minutes until the 1V showdown at 10 pm.
Princeton impressed during the season openers last Saturday, when the Tigers headed to both Navy and Georgetown and left with possession of both the Murtaugh and Fosburgh Cups. Princeton, which had two members of each class rowing in the 1V — along with freshman coxswain Sydney Edwards — topped Navy by more than two seconds, and then followed with a win over Georgetown by nearly six seconds.
Head coach Marty Crotty believed in the depth of his program, which was enhanced by a strong Class of 2021, and that depth showed itself in both regattas. Princeton won tight 1V, 2V, and 3V races against Navy, and it followed up with evening victories against the Hoyas. The tightest margin came in the 2V race, where the Tiger 3V held off the 2V by .3 of a second for the win.
Saturday will be the last road regatta for quite some time for Princeton, which will welcome both Dartmouth and Delaware to Lake Carnegie April 7. The Tigers will host IRA champion Cornell (April 14) and IRA runner-up Penn (April 21), and all three races will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
