Princeton Splits with Brown in Ivy Opener
March 24, 2018 | Softball
A big first inning for Brown in game one and a big second inning for Princeton in game two led to a split, 5-0 for the Bears in the opener and 7-1 for Princeton in the nightcap, as the Ivy League season got underway Saturday for the Princeton softball team in Providence.
Princeton was due to host the weekend series, but the midweek snowstorm let the Class of 1895 Field unplayable for the weekend, so the Tigers are the designated home team for the series.
In game one, Brown used a walk and two singles to lead the bases for Annie McGregor, who had a bases-clearing triple to put the Bears up 3-0 in the first. Cat Seitz then followed that with a sacrifice fly as Brown led 4-0 before Princeton's first swings.
Brown's fifth run came in the seventh, when two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch gave the Bears the 5-0 lead.Â
Emily Waters threw the last five innings for Brown in relief of Meghan Wimmer to get the win while Allie Reynolds took the loss for Princeton, throwing six innings before handing the ball to Caroline Taber.
Game two saw a six-run second inning for the Tigers, who began the frame with three singles and an error to score one. A walk to Joey Smith reloaded the bases, and Kaitlyn Waslawski cleared them with a triple to grow the lead to 4-0. Megan Donahey then picked up Waslawski with a base hit, and Keeley Walsh's sac fly pushed the lead to 6-0 before the inning was done.
Emily Taggart led off the third with a double and then came around to score on a ground ball and a wild pitch, putting Princeton up 7-0, and though Brown used a single, a walk, a failed fielder's choice and an error to spoil the shutout, that was all Brown got.
Ashley LaGuardia went the distance for Princeton, giving up the run on four hits and three walks to get the win, while Katie Orona took the loss for Brown in throwing the first four innings before Waters threw the final two in relief.
Sunday's series finale is set for 12:30 p.m. Live stats will be available here.
