Tigers Score Big Early, Hold On Against Brown, 9-8

Eight first-inning runs put the Princeton softball team up big Wednesday afternoon in their series finale with Brown, but the Tigers needed more and had to hold off a late Bears rally to get the win.

Princeton sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning, getting eight hits, a walk and a hit batter to pull ahead 8-0. Mikayla Blaska had a two-run single and Emily Taggart followed with a two-run double as the big hits in an inning that saw Princeton chase starter Grace Ladd after six batters.

Emily Waters entered in relief, and after giving up four of the hits and hitting a batter as she finished out the inning, allowed just a walk and two hits over the final five Tiger at-bats, retiring 15 of the final 18 batters she faced. Rookie Mackenzie Meyer had her first career home run in the fifth as the only Tiger run that came after the opening inning.

Meanwhile, Brown chipped away, using a hit, a hit batter and two errors to score two in the second, a walk and a pair of doubles to score two more in the third, and a leadoff Annie McGregor double two batters before an Annie Scarangella sacrifice fly in the fifth to pull with in 8-5.

Following Meyer's home run, Princeton held a 9-5 lead into the seventh inning, but the Bears had one more rally in them, reaching six of the first seven batters on five hits and a walk to plate three runs and pull within 9-8. Brown had the tying and go-ahead runners at second and third base when a pop-up ended the threat and saved the win for Princeton.

Allison Harvey and Joey Smith led Princeton with two hits apiece, while Anya Schmitz, McGregor and Sofia Venegas each had a pair of hits for Brown. Allie Reynolds went the distance for the Tigers to pick up her second win of the season.

The Tigers, now 2-1 in the Ivy League with their first series of the Ivy season now complete, will head to Harvard Saturday and Sunday for three as the league slate continues.
