Open Women Defeat Brown, Michigan To Retain Class of 1987 Trophy In Season Opener
March 24, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
Junior Sadie McGirr and sophomore Hadley Irwin were both members of the Princeton 1V core last season that experienced the high of an Ivy League championship and the disappointment of missing out on the NCAA grand final. They were excited to get back in the boat Saturday morning for the 2018 season opener, and they were thrilled with the Tigers' performance in the Class of 1987 Trophy showdown.
Princeton retained the historic title against Ivy rival Brown and took the race by more than five seconds Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie. Michigan, which placed third at the 2017 NCAA Championships, rallied over the second half of the race to surpass Brown, although each of the three crews won one of the three NCAA-format races during a clear, windy morning on Lake Carnegie.
The Tigers jumped out early on both opponents to grab a couple sets by the 500 mark, and they continued to build the advantage from there. Brown held the second spot through the first 1000, but Michigan made its move over the second half of the race.
Neither boat, however, could stop the Tigers from winning the opener and their 20th Class of 1987 Trophy. Princeton grabbed an open water lead by the 1500 mark and kept that advantage through the finish line (watch highlights from the race on the play link above).
"It felt great to be back on the race course with my fellow Tigers," Irwin said. "We have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks, but we certainly saw glimmers of championship speed today especially in the base of our piece. The whole team is fired up!"
"Going into the race we knew we had our work cut out for us," McGirr said. "Brown is always tough competition and Michigan had impressive results last weekend in Oakridge. We were able to get up on both crews by the 500-meter mark and continue to move throughout the body of the race.
"Not sitting in the third 500 is something we have talked about all year and it was great to be able to execute this in the race," McGirr added. "I am excited about the strong start to the season and to continue to improve and gain speed in the coming weeks."
Brown topped Princeton by just over three seconds in the 2V race, while Michigan took the top spot in the V4A. The Princeton B4 topped Brown by more than six seconds, while the Brown 3V topped Princeton by about nine seconds. It was a quality morning of racing, especially considering the weather conditions programs have dealt with on the leadup to the racing season.
Princeton returns to Lake Carnegie next Saturday morning to take on both Columbia and Notre Dame in a regatta that will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
