Princeton Takes Maryland to the Wire, Terps Survive 11-10

No. 19 Princeton had No. 2 Maryland on the ropes, leading through the first 50 minutes but the final goal with 45.1 seconds left on a free-position attempt gave the Terps an 11-10 win.

It was the largest deficit of the season for the defending national champion, as the Tigers had a 7-4 lead at halftime and led by as many as four. Maryland did not take its first lead until 10:21 of the second half with Princeton's best offensive player Kyla Sears on the bench after two yellow cards in the first half.

Princeton (6-5) was strong in the draw control circle early, allowing the Tigers to take a 4-2 lead. Princeton had goals from four different players while both Maryland (13-1) goals came from Megan Whittle.

Junior Elizabeth George added the Princeton lead with an unassisted strike, 5-2, at 13:40. The teams traded goals two goals throughout the rest of the first half. Half of Maryland's goals came from the eight-meter, as freshman goalie Sam Fish denied seven shots in the first half.

Sears picked up her second yellow card with 26 seconds left in the first half to force her to sit the bench for the remainder of the game. Sears scored twice on both shots in the first, and had one draw control.

Senior Colby Chanenchuk replaced Sears in the second half and helped to set up the half's first goal with a feed to senior Ellie McNulty that gave Princeton an 8-4 lead.

Maryland scored three goals in a span of 4:31 with Whittle netting her third and Caroline Steele scoring twice, one on the eight-meter to make it a one-goal game at 12:26.

Junior Kathryn Hallett's 21st goal of the season from sophomore Tess D'Orsi gave Princeton back a two-goal cushion less than two minutes later.

Again Maryland scored three unanswered with Grace Griffin netting two and Taylor Hensh converting on a free-position to give the Terps their first lead of the game 10-9 at 3:44.

With 1:32 on the clock, McNulty set up George for her third tally of the game to even the scoring at 10-10.

Princeton had a 12-11 advantage in draws and outshot Maryland 34-30.

Megan Taylor made 12 saves in goal for Maryland, while Fish stopped 11 for Princeton.

The Tigers continue their four-game homestand on Saturday, April 14 hosting Yale at 3 p.m.
