Tigers Win Two Events and Multiple PRs at Larry Ellis

The 4x100 of junior Charlie Volker, sophomore Joey Daniels, freshman Austin Carbone and senior Carrington Akosa ran 40.40 to start the day with a win for the Tigers at the Larry Ellis Invitational. It was a slightly different make up than last week's record-setting relay, as the Tigers jockey runners for the best position with Ivy League Heps just two weeks away.

Daniels took second place in the 110-meter hurdles with the best collegiate time of 13.98. He came in just behind unattached Cameron Hall, who compete in the Olympic trials two years ago. Daniels, who holds the Princeton record in this event with a 13.88, qualified for the final with the best prelim time of 14.07. Junior Sebastian Silveira just missed the final with a 15.01.

The Tigers laid claim to three of the top five spots in the 100 dash, paced by Akosa who clocked a season-best time of 10.45 for the win – near his PR of 10.49. Sophomore Joseph McGrath had a PR of 10.77 to take fourth and Volker was fifth with his best time of the season at 10.78.

Four Tigers finished in the top 12 in the 400 with senior Josh Freeman leading the way with a fourth-place finish of 47.63, his best time this season. Sophomore Connor Matthews was eighth at 48.77, while senior Brennan O'Connor was 11th with a PR of 48.98 and sophomore Cole Bransford 12th at 49.20.

All three Tigers in the 400 hurdles finished in the top 10. Senior Spencer Long had the best time at 53.36 to take third place. Sophomore Gab Montefalcone was fourth with a season-best 53.29 and sophomore Justice Dixon was ninth at 54.24.

In the debut of the Mike Brady Invitational Mile, four Tigers attempted to break the four-minute mile. Senior Garrett O'Toole came the closest with a 4:01.24 (1:01.62, 59.25, 1:01.62, 58.75) – the second-best mile time in Princeton outdoor history, behind Olympian Donn Cabral's 4:00.96 in 2010. O'Toole finished in second place behind volunteer distance coach and Olympian Robby Andrews. Andrews, competing for Adidas, clocked a 4:00.50. Senior William Paulson was fifth at 4:01.78 (1:01.19, 59.06, 1:01.39, 1:00.15) – the third best time in program history and sophomore Conor Lundy was seventh at 4:06.45 to also break Princeton's top 10.

In the final event on the track, the 4x400 of Austin Carbone, Bransford, O'Connor and Freeman took second place at 3:12.70 (1:37.78, 48.15, 48.87).

Senior August Kiles was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 5.06 (16-7.25). He passed on the first three heights, 4.66, 4.81 and 4.96 before easily making 5.06 on his first attempt. He was unable to get over 5.16 on his three chances.

Another second-place finish came from freshman Jeffrey Hollis in the high jump, as he tied for second with a clearance of 2.04 (6-8.25) on his third attempt. He started with an easy clear of 1.90 before passing on 1.95 and then taking 2.00 on his first attempt. Junior Andrew Diehl tied for fifth also with a 2.04 and freshman Jeffrey Lee-Heidenreich was 10th at 1.95 (6-4.75).

In the long jump, freshman Gilron Tsabkevich was third at 7.25 (23-9.5) coming on his fourth jump. He also had marks of 7.24, 7.09, 7.00 and 6.94. Sophomore Jesse Thibodeau was fourth at 7.21 (23-8) on his second attempt while also finding 7.20, 7.17 and 7.15.

Freshman Robbie Otal was fourth in the discus and senior Mitchel Charles seventh. Otal hit dirt at 50.29 (165) on his third attempt, and also had marks of 51.06, 48.42 and 44.31. Charles' best toss was 48.39 (158-9) on his fourth throw.

Princeton will compete at the Penn Relays this upcoming week and also at the TCNJ Lions Invitational on Saturday. They mark the final meets before Ivy League Heps on May 5-6 at Franklin Field.
