Columbia Takes Two from Tigers
April 21, 2018 | Softball
Columbia scored a pair of run-rule wins Saturday as the Lions' three-game series hosting the Princeton softball team got underway.
Columbia took the opener 9-1, breaking it open with a five-run fourth inning. Princeton got on the board first, using an Alison Harvey single and a Keeley Walsh base hit to score a run in the opening frame, but Columbia answered with a Madison Gott solo homer in the bottom half to tie it up.
From there, Columbia pitcher Madison Canby allowed only two hits and a hit batter as the Lions pulled away. Maria Pagane had a two-run triple in the second to put the Lions ahead 3-1, and after Princeton starter Allie Reynolds stranded two Lions in the third, Columbia used a two-run Gott double and a three-run Taylor Troutt home run to put up the five runs.
A Sommer Grzybek solo home run in the sixth ended it, putting Columbia up by eight runs.
In game two, Columbia's Erin Gallo gave up just three hits and a walk in a 9-0 win. Columbia used two walks and a Troutt base hit to score a run in the first before a walk and three singles added three in the third for a 4-0 Columbia lead. The fourth was again a big inning for the Lions in game two, as it had been in the opener, with a Grzybek two-run double punctuating a frame that saw Columbia draw four walks and get three hits.Â
Ashley LaGuardia took the loss in game two for the Tigers, working into the fourth before Caroline Taber, who also worked an inning and two-thirds in game one, and Alex Viscusi got the final two outs.
The losses dropped the Tigers to 6-8 in the Ivy with seven league games left while Columbia used the wins to move closer to contention for an Ivy League Championship Series spot, now standing at 11-6.
Sunday's single game will be a 12:30 p.m. start on the Ivy League Network with live stats available here.
