April 28, 2018 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Yale Bulldogs (19-17, 13-4 Ivy) picked up a doubleheader sweep over the Princeton Tigers (10-22, 7-10 Ivy) at Clarke Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers, 2-1, in game one, and 6-0, in game two.
Game 1: Yale 2, Princeton 1
In a pitchers' duel that featured only eight combined hits between the two squads, David Harding led the Tigers with two hits. Ben Gross struck eight hitters in seven innings of work, allowing just one earned run. Eli Kimbell punched out six hitters in his two relief frames.
Princeton put together the first scoring threat in the bottom of the first as Chris Davis led off with infield single and eventually stole second base. After a Conor Nolan walk, a strike out retired the side for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on a wild pitch. The Tigers came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Asher Lee-Tyson opened up the at-bat with a hit-by-pitch. The next hitter, Horsted, singled up the middle. After a flyout and passed ball, Joseph Flynn's RBI groundout tied the score at 1-all.
Yale's Griffin Dey began the top of the seventh with a home run to left center, putting the Bulldogs back in front, 2-1. Princeton's last eight hitters were retired as the Bulldogs earned the decision.
Dey had two the Bulldogs' three hits. Scott Politz picked up his fifth win of the season, scattering five hits in eight innings. Benny Wagner went threw a perfect ninth to score his sixth save of the year.
Game 2: Yale 6, Princeton 0
Jesper Horsted snagged two of Princeton's five hits. James Proctor pitched seven innings, struck out seven hitters and gave up two earned runs in the loss.
Yale knocked in two runs in the top of the third frame. Teddy Hauge led off with a walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After advancing to third base, Hauge touched home on a bunt single from Simon Whiteman. Benny Wanger followed with an RBI single to right field.
Princeton put together consecutive hits in the fourth, but a double play ended the scoring chance. An error gave the Bulldogs their third run in the top of the seventh. Yale tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Tim DeGraw had three runs and two hits at the top of the order for Yale. Kumbar Nambiar picked up his fifth win of the season, going six innings. Alex Stiegler earned the save, throwing the last three innings.
