Tigers Fall Short in NCAA Second Round at Boston College, 16-10
May 13, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
Junior Elizabeth George and sophomore Tess D'Orsi both had hat tricks but they weren't enough as the Princeton women's lacrosse season came to an end at No. 4 seed Boston College in a 16-10 decision.
Â
BC (20-1) jumped out to a 5-1 lead and would take a four-goal lead into the half. Princeton (13-6) came out with a jump, scoring three of the first four goals to cut it back to a three-goal game, 10-7, at 20:06. The Tigers defense, backstopped by an eight-save performance from freshman Sam Fish, held Eagles' leading scorer Sam Apuzzo to just one goal and two assists.
Â
George, who took the majority of the draws for the Tigers against Tewaaraton finalist Apuzzo, won four herself and got seven others to her teammates. Â
Â
Tess Chandler, who scored five goals for the Eagles, started the scoring, burying a feed from Emma Shurr. A minute later D'Orsi pivoted and made a move for her 40th goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game. Apuzzo then had a free-position attempt but passed off to Kaileen Hart for the tally. Hart, who would also total five goals in the game, followed up with an empty-net goal after Fish was called for a foul, leading to a free-position with Fish standing behind her. Hart added her third with a head fake and teammate Cara Urbank followed up to make it 5-1 at 14:34.
Â
Princeton netted the next two goals to halt the run as freshman Kyla Sears tallied her 63rd goal of the season at 13:03. George then scored on a pass from Colby Chanenchuk, who scored the double overtime game winner against Syracuse in the first round, at 11:45.
Â
Hart and Chandler traded goals to push the Eagles ahead 7-3 at 8:37.
Â
Kathryn Hallett started everything that led to Princeton's fourth goal. Causing a turnover with a stick check on the defensive end, Hallett took a run down the left flank and then found a speeding Nonie Andersen. It was bang-bang play as Andersen fed Rogers, who fed Chanenchuk for the goal at 5:07.
Â
Urbank and Apuzzo added goals in the final three minutes to expand the Eagles lead to 9-4 at the half.
Â
Hallett opened the scoring in the second half as Princeton went a 3-1 run. After a Chandler goal, Fish made a big stop and outlet to Sears who was calling for the ball at midfield. Sears caught the long ball, cleared and scored. George converted on a free-position attempt to cut the Tigers deficit to three, 10-7 at 20:06.
Â
BC went on a 4-1 run to take back its comfortable lead, 14-8 at 10:21. Arseanult, Chandler, Urbank and Walker all scored as D'Orsi sandwiched them with her second of the day.
Â
George received a fantastic pass from Andersen in a quick transition as she found the back of the net at 6:24. Less than a minute later Hart bounced in a response, 15-9.
Â
D'Orsi sealed the hat trick at 5:28 on a feed from Sears.
Â
Daly made a big save on Hallett as the Tigers made a push in the waning minutes. Two "goals" were waved off, one by senior captain Camille Sullivan another by senior Ellie McNulty in the final three minutes.
Â
Chandler's goal from Apuzzo with 47.2 seconds did stand as the Eagles advance to the quarterfinals to face Stony Brook. The Seawolves defeated Penn 18-5 this afternoon.
Â
Shots fell in favor of the Eagle, 35-25 while BC won three more ground balls 17-14. Turnovers were nearly even, 19-18. BC had a 17-11 advantage in draws.
Â
Princeton won its 14th Ivy League championship this season and a league-best fourth Ivy League tournament championship to earn the program's 26th bid to the NCAA Tournament.
