Lori Dauphiny Claims Third Straight Ivy Coach Of The Year Honor
May 16, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
Lori Dauphiny, who guided the Princeton open rowing team to a fifth league championship in six years last Sunday, has been named the 2018 Ivy League Head Coach of the Year, it was announced May 16 by the league office. It is the third straight Coach of the Year honor for Dauphiny, who will guide Princeton to its 22nd straight trip to the NCAA Championships next week.
Dauphiny helped Princeton win gold in both the 1V and 2V at last week's Ivy League Championships, and the 1V clinched the ninth Ivy League title Princeton has won since she took over before the 1997 season; that run includes the 2016, 2017, and 2018 Ivy championships. The two-time national coach of the year and 2006 US Rowing Woman of the Year, Dauphiny improved her career record to 221-28 (.888) during an impressive 2018 season.
"There is no one recipe for success and Lori is always ready to adapt and figure out the needs of this team," said senior co-captain Rachel Reed, a member of the gold-winning 2V. "Whether that's planning practice around what a boat has been struggling with recently, or figuring out a good long-term plan for each athlete, she's always looking at every small piece of the whole. She's straightforward and honest with the athletes which provides a really strong base for a good team. She's so committed to every single piece of every single practice and it would be hard to find someone who leads with more drive and more excitement than she does every day."
A multiple-time Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year, Dauphiny has seen her rowers succeed far beyond their Princeton days. There was no better example of this than the 2012 London Olympics, when five of her alumni competed. Three earned medals in the W8+, including two-time Olympic gold medalist Caroline Lind '06. Lind was also part of the U.S. gold medal-winning 8+ at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Both Andreanne Morin '06 and Lauren Wilkinson '11 earned silver medals with the Canadian 8+. Stone and Wilkinson returned to the 2016 Rio Games, and they were joined by Kate Bertko '06, another member of the historic 2006 NCAA championship team.
Dauphiny, who has led Princeton to three individual NCAA championships (1V in 2006, 2011; 2V in 1997) will bring the ninth-ranked Tigers to Sarasota, Fla., next week to compete in the 2018 NCAA Championships.
