PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers (10-23, 7-11 Ivy) finish the 2018 regular season at the Dartmouth Big Green (12-20-1, 8-6-1 Ivy) this weekend (May 5-6).
The Big Green are mathematically still alive for the Ivy League Championship Series, trailing just the Columbia Lions (11-7) for the second spot. With either a win or Columbia loss, the Yale Bulldogs (14-4) will clinch the No. 1 seed in the ILCS. The Lions wrap up their season at Cornell this weekend.
What Did You Miss?
- Monmouth scored a walk-off 2-1 victory over Princeton yesterday.
- Jack Anderson threw a season-high six innings, striking out five hitters and allowing just one earned run. Keith Gabrielson also punched out three Hawks' hitters in the loss.
- Yale earned a three-game sweep over Princeton at Clarke Field last weekend.
- In game one, Ben Gross struck out eight hitters in seven innings, allowing just one earned run. Yale's Griffin Dey began the top of the seventh with a home run to left center, putting the Bulldogs back in front, 2-1. Princeton's last eight hitters were retired as the Bulldogs earned the decision.
- Yale took down Princeton, 6-0 in game two. Jesper Horsted snagged two of Princeton's five hits. James Proctor pitched seven innings, struck out seven hitters and gave up two earned runs in the loss.
- The Bulldogs registered an 8-3 decision over the Tigers in game three on Sunday. Five different Tigers had a hit including Asher Lee-Tyson in the final home game of his Princeton career. Conor Nolan hit a two-run home run while Ryan Smith and Andrew Gnazzo combined for 11 strikeouts in the loss.
- Horsted's nine-game hitting streak came to an end in game three against Yale. He still leads the team in hitting (.315), total bases (47) and on-base percentage (.407). Horsted has seven extra-base hits, 18 runs and 14 RBI.
- Princeton has five hitters with at least a .250 batting average in Horsted, Asher Lee-Tyson, Conor Nolan, Chris Davis and Taylor Beckett.
- Nolan has a team-best .414 slugging percentage, 20 walks and six stolen bases along with nine extra-base hits and 21 RBI.
- Davis has been the Tigers' leadoff hitter, leading the squad with 25 runs. He has six extra-base hits and five stolen bases.
- Beckett is slugging .384 with five doubles and two home runs.
- Joseph Flynn has four home runs and 25 RBI.
- The Princeton pitching staff is averaging 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
- Gross has allowed three earned runs or less in six of his last seven starts and has struck out at least seven hitters in his last five outings.
- Smith has pitched at least five innings in six of his last seven starts.
- Eli Kimbell has been one of the best relief pitchers in the conference with a 2.00 ERA in 10 appearances. He has 34 strikeouts in 27 innings while opponents are hitting just .194 against him.
- The Tigers had three alums make the Big League in 2017 in Matt Bowman '14, Danny Barnes and Chris Young '02 and three make it in 2018 with Bowman, Barnes and David Hale '11.
- Bowman finished his second year with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 with another sub-4.00 ERA (3.99). He was tied for seventh in all of baseball with 75 appearances, adding three wins, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings of work.
- Barnes completed his first full season with the Blue Jays, posting a 3.55 ERA in 60 outings of the bullpen. He had 62 strikeouts in 66 innings, earned three victories and finished 13 games for Toronto.
- Seven other alums, Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Japan), David Hale '11 (AAA), Jack Murphy (AAA), Mike Ford '14 (AAA), Alec Keller '14 (AA), Cameron Mingo '16 (A) and Danny Hoy '16 (A), played professional baseball last season.
- This year, Barnes has not allowed an earned run in 13 of his 16 appearances this season.
- The Big Green are 12-20-1 this season and 8-6-1 in the Ivy League. They have wins over Villanova, Georgetown, CSU Bakersfield, Quinnipiac, Penn, Columbia, Cornell, Yale, and Brown.
- Sean Sullivan leads the Big Green in hitting (.347). He has five doubles and a triple.
- Dustin Shirley has a team-best 14 extra base hits with 11 doubles and three four-baggers. He's slugging .446 with 21 RBI along with five stolen bases.
- Austen Michel has appeared in 14 games for the Big Green and has six saves. In his 39 innings, he has three wins, 31 strikeouts and a 2.54 ERA.
