August 31, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Opening match nerves?
For Devon Peterkin, the answer was a resounding no.
Peterkin, one of five returning All-Ivy League players for the Tigers, led Princeton with 13 kills (and no errors), and added eight digs, three blocks, an assist and an ace in an impressive 3-0 sweep of formerly unbeaten Northwestern in the opening match of the 2018 Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament. Peterkin hit .520 in the match and paced an offense that hit .352 and averaged fewer than three errors per set as a team.
For Princeton, this was its first win over a Big 10 opponent (besides Rutgers) in more than two decades; the Tigers followed it up with another strong effort, as they swept Stephen F Austin 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 in a mid-afternoon showdown.
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Maggie O'Connell added nine kills against Northwestern, while the senior middle duo of Caroline Sklaver and Nnenna Ibe combined for nine kills and five blocks. Junior setter Jessie Harris guided the offense with 30 assists, while freshman libero Cameron Dames has 12 digs in her collegiate debut.
Peterkin and O'Connell led the way against Stephen F Austin (12 kills apiece), but the sophomore duo of Clare Lenihan and Alexa Underwood each added five kills apiece in the victory. Dames had a team-best 15 digs, while Harris posted a double-double with 35 assists and 14 digs. Sklaver had seven kills and four blocks while hitting .462.
Princeton will try to finish off a perfect weekend at the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament when it takes on the host Colgate Raiders Saturday at 11 am. You can watch the match live on the Patriot League Network, and you can also follow via live stats.
