Princeton Finishes Sweep With 3-0 Win At Colgate; Peterkin Earns Tournament MVP Honors
September 01, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
All in all, head coach Sabrina King couldn't have asked from much more this weekend.
Her three-time reigning Ivy League champion Princeton women's volleyball team took care of business at the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament in Hamilton, N.Y., sweeping all three of its opponents to jump out to a perfect 3-0 start to the 2018 season. Following Friday victories over both Northwestern and Stephen F. Austin, the Tigers finished the job with an impressive victory over the host Colgate Raiders.
Princeton would get pushed in the first two games, including an opener that was tied at 23, but the Tigers showed their experience both times and came away with the 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 victory.
Once again, junior Devon Peterkin led the way for the Tigers. Following her brilliant Friday showing against Northwestern, Peterkin came back with another 13-kill performance for Senior tri-captain Caroline Sklaver had nine kills and hit .533 for the match, while sophomore Alexa Underwood added seven kills and six digs. Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Maggie O'Connell added six kills, while All-Ivy setter Jessie Harris paced the offense with 35 assists.
Following the tournament, Peterkin earned Tournament MVP honors, while both Sklaver and Underwood were selected to the all-tournament team.
"It's great to be back and open the season with a shutout in our first tournament," Peterkin said. "We showed a great team effort, and we're excited to keep the momentum going toward next weekend in addition to preparing to compete for another league championship."
While there are still two matches still to be played in the tournament, the Tigers have clinched the victory and should have multiple players on the all-tournament team, as well as the weekend MVP. Those will be updated following the completion of the tournament.
Princeton will face a significantly challenging second weekend when it heads to Maryland for the 2018 Towson Tournament. The Tigers will open play Thursday with both Long Beach State and Towson, and will follow Friday with matches against Missouri, a 2017 NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier, and Big Ten power Ohio State.
