Colvin Lifts Princeton to Overtime Victory on Sherrerd Field
September 12, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Senior Jeremy Colvin scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to lift Princeton to a 2-1 win over Temple on Wednesday night, in the first soccer game to be played on Sherrerd Field at Class of 52 Stadium.
It marked the first goal of the season for Colvin, the Tigers' leading goal scorer a season ago. Colvin took advantage of an turnover after an Owl defender tried to play the ball back to his keeper but didn't get enough mustard on the pass. Instead Colvin seized the opportunity and nudged the ball a little further away from the keeper at 25 yards, recollected it inside the 18 and fired into empty goal.
"This goal was a great team goal as it showed the culmination of a lot of behind the scenes work we had done in practice and film," Colvin said. "Our back line helped set the press and as a team we forced them backwards into an uncomfortable situation where their center back faced their own goal. From there I was able to pounce on a poor back pass and skirt around the onrushing keeper before slotting it home in the goal."
Senior Sean McSherry put Princeton (2-3) on the scoreboard early, in the 12th minute, with his third strike of the season. Junior defender Benjamin Issroff played a long ball across the midfield and the speedy McSherry chested down the ball and banked a shot off the post and into the back of the net.
Temple (2-4) evened the game at 1-1 in the 72nd when Justin Hahn scored off the bench when he was open on the right side to bury a Jalen Campbell cross.
Junior Jacob Scachner earned his second win of the season making five saves in net for the Tigers including a monster stop in the 82nd on a chance close-range shot by Campbell.
Simon Lefebvre made three saves in goal for the Owls, who had one more shot in the game at 10-9.
Corner kicks were even at four apiece.
Princeton returns on Saturday to Sherrerd Field when it faces Boston University at 4 p.m.
