No. 25 Princeton Battles Back, But OT PK Lifts No. 10 Georgetown
September 13, 2018 | Women's Soccer
For most of the night on Sherrerd Field at the Class of 1952 Stadium, No. 10 Georgetown owned the stat sheet, outshooting No. 25 Princeton by better than three to one and holding the Tigers without a corner kick while drawing 11 of their own.
But, also for much of the night, Georgetown's lead was just one, thanks to a 24th-minute goal from Caitlin Farrell on which Georgetown won a ball in its defensive end and Paula Germino-Watnick sent a pass from just ahead of midfield to find Farrell and draw Tiger keeper Natalie Grossi off her line. Farrell won that battle, and that was the Hoyas' lead deep into the second half.
Princeton managed to tie when Sophia Gulati sent a cross that found Gabi Juarez, and though the Tigers forced overtime, a whistle in the box gave Georgetown's Kyra Carusa a penalty kick, and the Hoyas' leading scorer sent it inside the left post for a 2-1 win in the 93rd minute.
Georgetown ended up outshooting Princeton 20-6 on the night overall and 11-3 on goal, but Grossi made nine saves to help keep the Tigers in it in what became Princeton's first overtime game of the year.
The Tigers will return to Sherrerd Field for their final pre-conference game at 6 p.m. Sunday against Drexel. Admission is free.
Postgame Notes
• It was the first meeting between Princeton and Georgetown, and it was also the Tigers' first game on Sherrerd Field at the Class of 1952 Stadium, usually the home of Princeton lacrosse, due to field conditions on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
• Though it was Georgetown's third overtime game of the season, it was the first that did not end in a tie.
• Georgetown was the second top-25 team Princeton faced this season. N.C. State, then ranked No. 13, scored twice late to beat Princeton 3-1 on Sept. 2 at Myslik.
• Juarez's goal, the rookie's third as a Tiger, was just the second scored against Georgetown keeper Arielle Schachtman in her 582-plus minutes this season.
• In Drexel, Princeton will be facing a team also coming off a 2-1 OT loss to a Big East opponent, as the Dragons fell at Providence Thursday night.
